DEARBORN, Michigan ? The highly anticipated 2013 Ford Explorer Sport starts at $41,545, including an $825 destination charge, making it the most expensive Explorer in the lineup, according to Ford.com.
The performance-oriented Explorer Sport is $11,850 more expensive than the base 2013 Ford Explorer. The base 2013 Ford Explorer starts at $29,695, including shipping.
It is also fairly easy to get the 2013 Ford Explorer Sport near the $50,000 mark, once you load it up with options.
A $4,130 options package bundles such items as a navigation system, blind-spot information system, inflatable rear seatbelts, power liftgate, adjustable pedals with memory, power tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, leather-trimmed seats, heated and cooled front seats and push-button start. Adaptive cruise control adds $1,150 to the bottom line, while a dual-panel moonroof adds $1,595.
The 2013 Ford Explorer Sport is $4,755 more expensive than one of its chief competitors, the 2012 Dodge Durango R/T. The Durango R/T starts at $36,790, including a $995 destination charge. The Explorer Sport is also more expensive than the 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited 4x4, which is priced at $40,220, including a $925 destination charge. But the Explorer Sport is cheaper than a 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8 4x4, which starts at $54,595, including shipping.
The four-wheel-drive Explorer Sport is equipped with a 350-horsepower twin-turbocharged EcoBoost 3.5-liter V6 engine linked to a paddle-shifted six-speed automatic transmission. The EPA has yet to post official fuel-economy numbers on the Explorer Sport, but Ford says it will come in at 16 mpg in city driving and 22 mpg on the highway.
The Explorer Sport debuts at a time when the AAA Daily Fuel Gauge Report pegged the average price for a gallon of unleaded gasoline in the U.S. at $3.54, a decline of 19 cents from a month ago.
Ford describes the Explorer Sport as "our highest performance, most capable Ford Explorer ever."
