Mr Johnson has submitted proposals for a takeover of train routes to the government.
He argues that under mayoral management passengers would benefit from more frequent and reliable services, simpler ticketing, cleaner and safer stations and better standards of customer service.
It would also boost the capital?s competitiveness by delivering major improvements to mainline rail services, supporting economic growth and jobs for Londoners, he says.
In addition, the Mayor states that bringing the franchises under the control of his office would save millions of pounds, which would be reinvested into further improving the network.
The Southeastern and Greater Anglia franchises are particularly in the Mayor?s sights, with potential savings of ?100m over 20 years.
Currently, with the exception of the London Overground network, rail services into the capital are provided by several private train operating companies, each with their own franchise agreement with central government.
Mr Johnson said: ?London?s rail passengers deserve far better service than the current franchises deliver and the economic benefits of properly investing in our rail infrastructure are huge.
?An efficient rail service is vital in order to remain competitive in challenging economic times, helping to usher in greater prosperity in the future, not just for the capital but for UK PLC.
?This plan gives us the opportunity to create a truly joined up suburban railway system that would vastly improve service and deliver better stations.
?A more coherent London-wide structure would bring more frequent trains, safer stations and sanity to a mind bogglingly complex fare system.?
Since Transport for London and the Mayor took over running London Overground in 2007, reliability has increased to 96 per cent and customer satisfaction is at 90 per cent.

BETHESDA, Md. (AP) ? A punishing golf course. Temperatures that topped 100. Hunter Mahan still managed to make Friday at Congressional feel like a breeze.
Mahan finally had a good score to match the efficient way he has been swinging the club. He made seven birdies in the stifling heat for a 6-under 65, giving him a two-shot lead going into the weekend at the AT&T National as he goes after a PGA Tour-leading third win of the year.
Chris Couch sought medical attention and struggled to finish in the oppressive conditions. One caddie had to stop after nine holes, and another vomited to the side of the 13th green from drinking too much water.
Tiger Woods stayed in the game with a 68 in the morning, when it was still so hot that towels were used to wipe sweaty faces more than to clean clubs. He talked about the value of staying fit and strong to survive days like this. He was five shots behind.
Mahan, though, has set himself apart for two days.
"I hit a lot of good shots," said Mahan, who missed only two fairways and three greens. "I hit so many fairways and greens, I made it easy on myself. This is a pretty punishing golf course if you get off line a little bit. I put myself in some great spots to make putts. And I felt like I played well on the back, when it was getting really hot and you're getting a little bit more tired."
Mahan was at 7-under 135. His two rounds fulfilled what his swing coach, Sean Foley, said Thursday when describing his ball-striking as "a laser show."
Robert Garrigus had his sixth straight sub-par round at Congressional ? that includes last year at the U.S. Open when he became a footnote in history as only the fourth American to break par all rounds of a U.S. Open ? with a 67 and was two shots behind, along with Jimmy Walker and Brendon De Jonge, who each had a 69.
Stewart Cink, who draped a towel over his head waiting his turn to putt on the 14th green, showed signs of a resurgence with a 68 that put him in the group three shots behind, along with Vijay Singh (70), Pat Perez (69) and Rod Pampling (67).
Woods was at 2-under 140, in a tie for 11th.
More telling than only 18 players who remained under par was the cut at 148. It was one shot higher than the cut for the U.S. Open last year at Congressional, and it was the highest score to make the cut at a regular PGA Tour event since 149 at The Barclays in 2009.
Congressional was tough ? fast and firm on the course, scorching in the air ? but it was fair.
Mahan twice had to save par over the last five holes. He came up short on the 14th, but he had a couple of options. With the pin all the way to the back behind a ridge, he could run it up the slope to the hole, or even play long and have it roll back to the hole. He chose to lag it to the hole, hit it thin, and got away with the slight miss when it rolled back to 2 feet.
"I expected to hit it a little bit cleaner off the club face, but that how you shoot 65," he said. "Get good breaks like that."
He was more pleased with the 17th, which he called the one loose swing of the day. Mahan missed the green to the right, but saved par. On the 18th, he ripped a tee shot and had sand wedge into the green to 12 feet for one last birdie.
Woods was as happy about two pars as he was with his 50-foot eagle putt on the 16th hole that put him under par for the first time all week.
He was in trouble early after a few tee shots were caught in the dense rough that makes Congressional feel like a U.S. Open and forced him to hack out short of the green. Both times, he hit wedges that landed by the hole, bounced 15 feet by and caught the slope to come back within 3 feet.
"The pars at 14 and 15 were something I needed to have happen," Woods said. "I hit two good wedge shots in there after two poor drives and gave myself a couple good looks, made those, and then I rewarded all that hard work at the next hole with eagle."
Woods was three shots behind when he finished, and didn't expect to fall back much farther. The course, already looking like it was supposed to play last year for the U.S. Open, was getting firm and crusty from the scorching heat. It was the kind of day reminiscent of when Ken Venturi won the 1964 U.S. Open at Congressional, so dehydrated he almost didn't finish. And high heat was expected well into the weekend, making this a test of survival.
But there were birdies available, with some pins tucked behind slopes to feed the ball close to the hole.
Garrigus took advantage of a forward tee on the 12th hole to stuff his approach inside 4 feet, and then he really let his length work to his advantage toward the end of the back nine. He belted a 348-yard tee shot beyond the bunkers on the par-5 16th that left him only a 6-iron into the green. And on the 18th, with the tees move up to 481 yards, he hit a drive so far along the downhill fairway that he had only a lob wedge left. He spun that back to a few feet.
He closed out his round on the par-5 ninth, which played 597 yards. He hit 7-wood for his second shot just short of the green to set up an easy birdie.
Garrigus was rightfully proud when he mentioned Thursday evening that he was only the fourth American with four sub-par rounds in the U.S. Open. The others were Lee Trevino at Oak Hill in 1968, Lee Janzen at Baltusrol in 1993 and Curtis Strange at Oakmont in 1994. Strange and Garrigus are the only ones in that group who didn't win.
Even going back to previous AT&T National events at Congressional, Garrigus has quite a record ? this was his 18th round, and he has only been over par three times.
"Everything about this course fits my eye," he said. "If I'm playing well and swinging it good, I feel like I can hit every fairway, just the way everything sets up. They give you perfect targets. There's stuff to aim at. That's what I love."
Length never hurts, but it helps to cope with the heat. Perez, who grew up in San Diego, was asked five questions after his second straight round of 69. Three of those answers included the words, "It's hot."
The biggest tease of the day was the sound of a sprinkler ? not on the course, but in a backyard next to the 14th green.

NBC13 (WNYT) sports reporter and weekend anchor Andrew Catalon has another Olympic Games assignment.
Catalon will call several tennis matches from Wimbledon during the Games in London July 27-Aug. 12. NBC announced its announcers lineup Thursday.
The Olympic tennis will be shown on Bravo starting July 28. The tennis competition lasts just the first week of the Games.
This will be Catalon's third Olympics assignment. In the 2008 Summer Games from Beijing, he called team handball from NBC's New York studios. Two years ago, he did curling from the Winter Games in Vancouver, British Columbia.
Catalon is no stranger to calling tennis matches. He has worked for CBS Sports on its 3D coverage of the U.S. Open the last two years.
"Honored to be working my 3rd Olympics for NBC," Catalon tweeted. "As a tennis fan, I'm beyond thrilled to be doing tennis play-by-play from Wimbledon."

The 2012 London Games will be Bob Costas? 10th for NBC and his ninth as primetime host. After serving as late night host in 1988 from Seoul, South Korea, Costas earned acclaim for his work as primetime host from Barcelona, Atlanta, Sydney, Salt Lake City, Athens, Torino, Beijing and Vancouver. Costas, who has the longest tenure of the network?s sports commentators, joined NBC in 1980.
Al Michaels, one of the most renowned commentators of all-time and whose legendary ?Do you believe in miracles? Yes!? call at the 1980 Lake Placid Winter Olympic Games 32 years ago stands as one of the most famous calls in sports history, will work his second straight Olympics for NBC, serving as host of NBC?s live weekend and weekday daytime coverage from London. Michaels was the daytime host at the Vancouver Winter Olympic Games in 2010, his first Olympic broadcast assignment in 22 years, when he covered hockey and hosted the Closing Ceremony at the 1988 Calgary Winter Olympics for ABC.
Dan Patrick will make his Olympic hosting debut, joining Michaels as host of NBC?s live weekday and weekend daytime coverage from London. Patrick, host of Football Night in America and the Dan Patrick Show, served as an Olympic correspondent for NBC in Vancouver.
Mary Carillo will host NBC?s late-night coverage for the third time, reprising her role from Beijing and Vancouver. Carillo will also serve as an Olympic correspondent and provide a look into life in the United Kingdom through a collection of features done in her own inimitable style, similar to her acclaimed work during the Beijing and Vancouver Games. London is Carillo?s 11th Olympic Games and eighth for NBC.
NBC SPORTS NETWORK
Michelle Beadle makes her Olympic debut as a host on NBC Sports Network?s coverage from London. She will also serve as a correspondent for Access Hollywood during the Games. Beadle joined NBCUniversal in May of this year.
Liam McHugh, one of the emerging voices in sports television today, continues to add to his rapidly growing workload as he hosts NBC Sports Network?s coverage from London. McHugh recently hosted NBC and NBC Sports Network?s studio coverage of the Stanley Cup Final.
Willie Geist, host of MSNBC?s Up Way Too Early and co-host of Morning Joe, makes his Olympic debut as a host of NBC Sports Network?s coverage from London.

Kelly Tilghman, a member of Golf Channel?s original cast and one of the network?s most versatile anchors, makes her Olympic debut as host of MSNBC?s coverage from 30 Rockefeller Plaza.
Rob Simmelkjaer will make his Olympic debut as host of MSNBC?s coverage from 30 Rock. Simmelkjaer, who also serves as Senior Vice President of NBC Sports Ventures, is a host on the NBC Sports? Update Desk and NBC SportsTalk on the NBC Sports Network.

Fred Roggin, the sports director at KNBC-TV, NBC?s owned-and-operated station in Los Angeles, will host CNBC?s Boxing coverage from 30 Rockefeller Plaza, his seventh Olympics assignment for NBC. Roggin?s previous Olympic assignments have included hosting curling coverage from the 2010 Vancouver Games and the 2006 Torino Games; CNBC?s coverage from the Athens Games; serving on the ?Special Features Unit? at the Salt Lake Games in 2002; and working as the boxing reporter at the 2000 Sydney Games. Joining Roggin in the studio will be Laila Ali, a former professional boxer and daughter of legend Muhammad Ali, making her Olympic broadcasting debut.

Pat O?Brien, a veteran of five Olympic Games as a commentator, will serve as host of tennis coverage on Bravo. The London Games will be O?Brien?s fourth Olympics for NBC and sixth overall. He last worked for NBCUniversal at the 2004 Athens Olympic Games.

Top TV broadcaster Ryan Seacrest will make his Olympic broadcasting debut, serving as a contributor for NBC?s primetime coverage from London.
Legendary tennis star and broadcaster John McEnroe will make his Olympic broadcasting debut in London. McEnroe, who has served as a tennis analyst for NBC since 1992, and dominated the tennis world in the 1980?s, winning three Wimbledon and four U.S. Open titles, will serve as an Olympic correspondent on NBC?s primetime coverage.
Bela Karolyi, arguably the most successful coach in gymnastics history, is one of his sports? most-recognized personalities. He has coached and trained world-renowned gymnasts for the Olympic Games from 1976-2004, and returns to NBC as an Olympic correspondent, the same roll he filled during the Beijing Olympics.
Jimmy Roberts, a 13-time Emmy Award winner, will contribute feature stories and essays and serve as an Olympic correspondent during NBC?s daytime coverage.
GUEST COMMENTATORS:
Shaun White, a two-time Olympic gold medalist, and Jimmy Fallon, host of NBC?s Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, will serve as guest commentators during portions the London Games.

Cynthia Potter, who made three Olympic teams and won bronze in 1976, returns as analyst, a role she?s handled for NBC since the 1992 Games. Alex Flanagan will report from the diving venue. London is her second Olympic assignment, having served as a sports desk reporter in Vancouver and as host of CNBC and USA Network?s coverage during Beijing.
BASKETBALL: Bob Fitzgerald, the voice of the Golden State Warriors for CSN Bay Area, will handle the play-by-play of the men?s and women?s competitions, his second Olympic broadcast assignment. He called the water polo competition in Beijing. He is joined by two respected analysts: Philadelphia 76ers Head Coach Doug Collins (men?s), and Basketball Hall-of-Famer Ann Meyers (women?s). Collins, a member of the 1972 U.S. Olympic basketball team, takes on his third Olympic broadcasting assignment. Meyers, who won silver as a member of the U.S. Olympic basketball team in 1976, is working her fourth Olympics as a broadcaster. Craig Sager returns as reporter for both men?s and women?s hoops, a role he?s held since the 2000 Sydney Games. Boston Celtics head coach Doc Rivers will make his Olympic broadcasting debut as a studio analyst in London.
BOXING: Bob Papa and analyst Teddy Atlas will call boxing. London is Papa?s eighth Olympics, including calling boxing in Barcelona in 1992, Atlanta in 1996, Athens in 2004 and Beijing in 2008. He also called water polo in Sydney in 2000 and a variety of winter sports in Salt Lake City in 2002, Torino in 2006 and Vancouver in 2010. Atlas analyzed the boxing competition from Sydney in 2000, Athens in 2004 and Beijing in 2008. Russ Thaler will serve as the boxing reporter, his first Olympic assignment.
SOCCER: NBC?s MLS play-by-play commentator Arlo White will call his first Olympics, working alongside men?s analyst Kyle Martino, who is also working his first Olympic Games, and women?s analyst Brandi Chastain, calling her second Olympics. Martino was a long-time Major League Soccer player, having played for the All Star team in 2003, and was 2002 MLS Rookie of the Year. Chastain has played in three Olympics (Athens, Sydney and Atlanta) and three Women?s World Cups (1991, 1999 and 2003). Reporter Drea Avent, in her Olympic debut, will cover women?s soccer in London.
BEACH VOLLEYBALL: Chris Marlowe (play-by-play) won a gold medal as captain of the 1984 U.S. Olympic volleyball team, and will return for his sixth Olympics as an NBC commentator. Kevin Wong (analyst) is making his Olympic debut. Wong is a beach volleyball Olympian, and a three-time All-American at UCLA where he led the Bruins to two NCAA Championships in 93? and 95?. Heather Cox returns for her third Olympics as a reporter.
VOLLEYBALL: Paul Sunderland, a member of the gold medal-winning U.S. volleyball team at the 1984 Olympics, returns to call indoor volleyball, an assignment he had for NBC in Barcelona, Atlanta, Sydney and Beijing. He is joined by two-time Olympian Kevin Barnett, in his second straight Olympic assignment.
WATER POLO: Emmy award-winning Mike ?Doc? Emrick, the voice of the NHL on NBC and NBC Sport Network, will serve as the water polo play-by-play announcer for the second time, a role he served in Athens in 2004. Emrick worked six Winter Games as the play-by-play voice of men and women?s hockey. He is joined by Wolf Wigo, a three-time Olympian and former captain of U.S. men?s water polo team, and Julie Swail, former captain of the U.S. women?s water polo team that earned the silver medal at the 2000 Sydney Olympics. Swail participated in NBC?s broadcast in 2004 as a water polo analyst in Athens. In 2008, she competed in the triathlon at the Beijing Olympics. She will also serve as the analyst for the triathlon competition.
WRESTLING: Jason Knapp makes his Olympic debut as wrestling play-by-play announcer. He is joined by Olympic gold medalist and American wrestling legend Rulon Gardner, who will participate in his second Olympic broadcast after being an analyst in the 2008 Beijing Games. In 2000 at the Sydney Olympics, Gardner won the gold after defeating Aleksander Karelin. Karelin had been undefeated for 13 years and had not given up a point in six years prior to his loss in the gold-medal match to Gardner. At the end of the 2000 Olympics, Gardner was selected to serve as the U.S. flag bearer at the Closing Ceremony. He then followed with a bronze in 2004 at the Olympic Games in Athens, where he left his shoes on the mat, the sport?s traditional symbol of retirement.
NBCUniversal will provide 5,535 hours of coverage for the 2012 London Olympics across NBC, NBC Sports Network, MSNBC, CNBC, Bravo, Telemundo, NBCOlympics.com, two specialty channels, and the first-ever 3D platform, an unprecedented level that surpasses the coverage of the 2008 Beijing Olympics by nearly 2,000 hours. The 5,535 hours are the equivalent of 231 days of coverage.

By the time police asked Internet users to remove graphic photos of a man decapitated after he jumped in front of a train, it was too late for the dead man's son. He had already seen the grisly images ? recorded by teenagers?just after the incident occurred ? when they went viral on Twitter.
You can hear the teens in the background of the shaky cellphone video, recorded Wednesday afternoon in the Netherlands, calling to each other, their adolescent voices tweaked with shock, excitement. "Here. Here is the body. Here he is," one boy shouts in Dutch. Another points to the man's severed head, a few feet away. No one is laughing.?
At least 70 students?at a nearby school ??in the?Kennemerland area of?Haarlem ??witnessed the accident or immediate aftermath, reports?Ijmuider Courant, a Netherlands news site. School officials swung into action. Within 10 minutes of the incident,?administrators?guided students away from the station and back to the school. There, counselors and members of the?Kennemerland police department spent the afternoon talking to kids and later, their parents, about what they had seen.
Yet at the same time that the school was trying to mitigate the psychological damage of the incident, a video of it was being shared among students and?making its way out onto the Internet, by way of Twitter.
This is the video the?dead man's son had already seen when?Kennemerland?police broke the news to the family. It was then that son connected the two, and realized the video was of his father.?
When the police department found out about the video, the department took to Twitter and asked the public to stop sharing the video. In Dutch, the police?asked, "Anyone who has shared pictures of the?Driehuis?train victim, remove them immediately. It is disrespectful and goes too far!"
It's a good-faith plea, made by a police department savvy in the ways of the Internet, enough to know it was already too late. It was too late 15 minutes after the video first hit Twitter, when the teenage boy who first sent it out into cyberspace deleted his original tweet. It had already been?retweeted countless times. And that is the lesson that Evy Elschot, spokesperson for the Kennemerland police department, hopes people will take away from this incident, instead of the gory details.
"The boy didn't understand the impact of what he had done," Elschot told msnbc.com in a telephone interview. Identifying him only as a teenager between the ages of 14 and 16, Elschot described him choking on tears and shaking with panic when confronted by police. "The boy said he wished he didn't do it, that he could take it back, but of course he couldn't," she said.
The boy tweeted (in Dutch), "I hate myself for what I've done," according to news site RTL.?
Elschot told msnbc.com she regrets the story receiving national attention, resulting in?the inevitable spread of a video that causes pain to a family already suffering. (Msnbc.com will not link to the video.) To protect the family's privacy, she would not share the age of the son who saw his father in the video.?
According to?Elschot, it was a very difficult decision to ask people via Twitter to delete the video.
The Kennemerland police department is very active on Twitter, using the official account to communicate with the public on such things as traffic delays, especially crowded areas at festivals, as well as finding witnesses to crimes and fielding complaints (and compliments) from the public. But by using Twitter to discuss a suicide, the Kennemerland police department went against what Elschot describes as Holland's "gentleman's agreement" to not publicize details about suicides.
Elschot said that it's in consideration for families whose?members?commit suicide,?but this practice also abides by the World Health Organization's recommendations for avoiding suicide contagion ? a phenomenon which affects those already at risk. Train suicides account for 4 to 10 percent of suicides in the Netherlands, the Journal of Affective Disorders reported in 2010.??Such a video going viral could spread contagion as well.
Elschot agrees that there's an important discussion to be had, but not about this family's tragedy.
"This really is about young people and how the world is different," she said. "When I was a kid, I might say some things in my small town without thinking, but we only had the telephone. Someone else might read your letter, and there is embarrassment for awhile, but not the oil spread of information we now have on the Internet. Kids need to understand that and their parents need to tell them."

DAMASCUS, Syria (AP) ? A strong explosion rocked the Syrian capital Thursday near a busy market and the country's highest court, wounding at least three people and sending clouds of black smoke into the sky.
The blast came as tensions threatened to spread across the region. Neighboring Turkey deployed anti-aircraft guns and other weapons alongside its border with Syria, nearly a week after Syrian forces shot a Turkish military plane out of the sky, Turkish state TV said Thursday.
Major world powers will meet Saturday in Geneva for talks on Syria, but few observers expect a major breakthrough. Syria has the protection or Russia, a veto-wielding member of the U.N. Security Council, and has so far been impervious to international pressure.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said Thursday that Moscow will not endorse a call for Assad to give up power.
"We are not supporting and will not support any external meddling," he said. "External players must not dictate ... to Syrians, but, first of all, must commit to influencing all the sides in Syria to stop the violence."
It was not clear who was behind Thursday's blast in Damascus.
Much of the violence that has gripped Syria since the uprising began has been sanctioned by the government to crush dissent. But rebel fighters are launching increasingly deadly attacks on regime targets, and several massive suicide attacks this year suggest al-Qaida or other extremists are joining the fray.
An Associated Press reporter at the scene of the blast said some cars were charred and many had their windshields blown out.
"I did not see any wounded people, but cars and nearby shops were damaged," said Fawaz Mishhim, a witness who was in a nearby market when he heard the explosion.
Syria's state-run TV said the explosion was in the parking lot of the Palace of Justice, a compound that houses several courts. The blast happened at 1 p.m. near the capital's famous Hamidiyeh Market, an area crowded with families stocking up on food and other supplies for the weekend, which begins on Friday in Syria.
Witnesses reported hearing one blast, but state-run TV said two explosions struck the area. The report also said a roadside bomb was found but did not explode.
Syria has been hit by a wave of massive explosions in recent months, killing dozens of people. Most of the explosions targeted the security agencies of President Bashar Assad, who is fighting to end a 15-month-old uprising against his rule.
Last month, an explosion targeted a military intelligence compound south of Damascus killing 55 people. It was Syria's deadliest blast.
Elsewhere in Syria, activists reported clashes between troops and rebels and said more than a dozen people were killed nationwide. Some of the heaviest battles were in the eastern city of Deir el-Zour, activists said.
Activists say more than 14,000 people have been killed since the Syrian uprising began in March 2011.
Turkey, a former ally, has become one of the strongest critics of the Assad regime. Tensions between the two countries spiked following the downing of the Turkish plane last week.
Syria insists the Turkish military plane violated its air space on Friday. Turkey says the jet had unintentionally strayed into Syria's air space and was inside international airspace when it was brought down over the Mediterranean by Syria.
The search for two missing pilots continued in Syrian waters but hopes for their survival are dim, Turkish authorities said. The Turkish military said Thursday that research teams have found some pieces of the plane as well as equipment belonging to the pilots.
A small convoy of military trucks towing anti-aircraft guns entered a military outpost in the border village of Guvecci, which faces a Syrian military outpost, according to TRT television footage.
Several anti-aircraft guns also have been deployed elsewhere alongside the border. Some trucks were seen carrying self-propelled multiple rocket launchers, the footage showed.
Ties between Turkey and Syria have not been so low since the late 1990s, when the two countries almost went to war. Tensions ran high in the 1980s and 1990s as Turkey developed military ties with Israel and Syria sheltered Turkish Kurd guerrilla leader Abdullah Ocalan.
Now, Turkey is hosting civilian opposition groups as well as hundreds of army defectors who are affiliated with the rebel Free Syrian Army.
Turkish President Abdullah Gul was holding a National Security Council meeting on Thursday, TRT said. The meeting, attended by Cabinet members and the military's top brass, is expected to focus on tensions with Syria.

I have been following this LinkedIn China group for quite some time. It keeps me updated on job movements in China, ranging from IT to financial roles. The group sends out email updates on job opportunities posted by recruiters. It also has a long list of career network subgroups for different regions and expertises too (see below).
The group was created and is managed by Thomas Zhou who is a partner at DaCare International, a firm that helps foreign companies recruit talent in China. It?s an interesting use of LinkedIn to get crowdsourced job postings focusing just on the Chinese market. Zhou?s LinkedIn profile also states that he is a ?China LinkedIn/Social Media Strategist? who helps other companies better make use of the professional social networking platform.
The group announced recently that it has over 70,000 members which is a pretty healthy number considering its niche nature.
LinkedIn has about two million users in China. Though that is a small chunk of its total user count at 161 million, it does suggest that LinkedIn is a useful platform for China, especially when jobs are at the international level. While Facebook and Twitter are blocked in China ? LinkedIn has an edge merely by still being accessible.
Tianji, a similar local service, previously told us that it is attracting 500,000 users each month which looks like a healthy growth figure. We haven?t heard much about Ushi which is another similar service in China.

SANFORD, Fla. (AP) ? A judge said Friday he needed to look at evidence before deciding whether to grant George Zimmerman bond following a sort of mini-trial that featured the defense trying to poke holes in the prosecution's case by calling the neighborhood watch leader's father to testify and playing a chilling 911 call from the night Trayvon Martin was fatally shot.
Circuit Judge Kenneth Lester did not indicate when he might make a decision. He revoked Zimmerman's bond earlier this month when prosecutors told the judge Zimmerman and his wife misled the court about how much money they had during the April bond hearing.
Prosecutors said a website Zimmerman created for his legal defense had raised $135,000 at the time of his first bond hearing, and Zimmerman and his wife did not mention the money then.
Zimmerman's attorney briefly considered calling his client to the stand, but ultimately decided against it.
Much of the bond hearing focused on the donations raised through a PayPal account and how it was repeatedly transferred between bank accounts Zimmerman and his wife controlled.
"It was done to hide the money so they could deceive the court, lie to the court. Mrs. Zimmerman lied to the court and this defendant just sat there and let it happen," prosecutor Bernie de la Rionda said.
Zimmerman's attorney attempted to show there was no effort to hide the money from the judge.
"It is not the grand conspiracy the state seems to suggest," attorney Mark O'Mara said.
There was also a great deal of evidence and testimony about the head injuries Zimmerman suffered the night of the fight with Martin, including a broken nose and cuts on his skull. Zimmerman was also described by a probation officer as a "model client" who had not violated any of his previous bond conditions.
At times, the bond hearing had the flavor of a trial or a self-defense hearing, with both sides presenting what sounded like opening statements.
Attorneys for Zimmerman called prosecutors' case weak and said he gave 11 voluntary statements to police and re-enacted the shooting with authorities. O'Mara twice played a chilling 911 call in which someone is repeatedly screaming "help" in the background. A gunshot is also heard on the recording.
George Zimmerman's father took the witness stand and testified that he was certain that it was his son yelling for help on the tape.
Prosecutors argued they had evidence that Zimmerman was the aggressor and chased Martin, who they said acted in self-defense.
But the judge was not ruling on the merits of the case. Instead, the judge was focused on what happened at the previous bond hearing.
Zimmerman's attorney called an expert on finances to testify, attempting to show that Zimmerman and his wife did not try to hide anything.
Adam Magill, a financial forensic specialist, said everything was in order and matched up "perfectly." But Magill also testified that moving the money around from different accounts would "make it appear that you didn't have the money."
Prosecutors also said the couple talked in code during recorded jailhouse conversations about how to transfer the donations to different bank accounts. At one point, George Zimmerman asked how much money they had. She replied "$155." Prosecutors allege that was code for $155,000. Their reference to "Peter Pan" was code for the PayPal system through which the donations were made, prosecutors said.
Shellie Zimmerman has since been charged with perjury. She is out of jail on $1,000 bond and her arraignment is set for July 31.
Zimmerman's defense also played videos of Zimmerman talking and showing his injuries after the shooting. Attorneys then spent time questioning Kevin O'Rourke, a Sanford firefighter and emergency medical technician who responded to the shooting scene. Attorneys asked questions about the extent of Zimmerman's injuries, particularly how much blood was on his head and face.
"A good 45 percent of his head and face were covered with blood," O'Rourke said.
Zimmerman has been charged with second-degree murder for fatally shooting 17-year-old Martin on Feb. 26 at a gated apartment community in Sanford. Zimmerman has pleaded not guilty and claims the shooting was self-defense under the state's "stand your ground" law.
Martin's parents and supporters claim the teenager was targeted because he was black and Zimmerman started the confrontation that led to the shooting. Zimmerman's father is white and his mother is Hispanic.
The 44 days between the shooting and Zimmerman's arrest inspired nationwide protests, led to the departure of the Sanford police chief and prompted a U.S. Department of Justice probe.
Zimmerman's attorney has argued in court papers that he is no threat to the public and proved he wasn't a flight risk by returning to jail when his bond was revoked. O'Mara also argued that the bulk of the more than $200,000 raised by the website has now been turned over to a third-party administrator and Zimmerman has no control over the money.

Now that the Supreme Court has upheld President Barack Obama's health care initiative, will Congress have to rewrite it from scratch?
It's not a paradoxical question. The court signed off on nearly all of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, but it struck down one provision, and in doing so ? whether it knew it or not ? it may have put the poorest Americans at the greatest risk of being left without any health insurance.
Chief Justice John Roberts said as part of the 5-4 decision that states can't be penalized for refusing to join the law's expansion of Medicaid eligibility. Health law experts said that had the practical effect of flipping an all but mandatory program into one a state can choose not to join.
Here's the problem: The ACA creates state health insurance "exchanges," providing tax credits to eligible residents to buy affordable, state-certified health insurance. But the poorest Americans aren't among that eligible pool under the law, because the law assumes they'll be covered by the expansion of Medicaid, which is no longer a given.?
In states that reject the expansion, poor residents could be left without either form of coverage ? as many as 15 million in the highly unlikely event that all 50 states opt out.

Medicaid currently covers only some low-income people, primarily parents with children, pregnant women, people with severe disabilities and senior citizens. Adults without disabilities or children, in other words, aren't generally covered. That's the group the Medicaid expansion was supposed to help the most.

If their states opt out, young working adults below the poverty line could be in a Catch-22, because "they may not get Medicaid, and they may not be eligible to purchase insurance through the exchange," said Christina S. Ho of the Rutgers University School of Law, who was a member of President Bill Clinton's Domestic Policy Council.?
It works this way:
The insurance tax credits are targeted at people with incomes between 100 percent and 400 percent of the poverty line as determined by the U.S. Census Bureau. Congress sought to compel the states to cover everyone under the line through Medicaid.
The federal government promised to fully cover all expenses for the expanded coverage before eventually pulling back to cover 90 percent after a few years. The states would have to pick up the extra 10 percent eventually.
States aren't required to take part, but if they don't, the law as enacted would have turned off the flow of all Medicaid funding from Washington.?
That enforcement mechanism is what the court invalidated Thursday, meaning there's no penalty for a state that says, "Thanks, but no thanks."
Twitter reactions to the ruling
Because states haven't had time to consider yet whether they will opt in or out. it's difficult to say how many people could be affected.?
But about half of the nearly 50 million uninsured Americans have incomes below the new eligibility thresholds, according to the latest report, in October, from the Kaiser Commission on Medicaid and the Uninsured. And about 6 in 10 of them are adults without dependent children ? the primary beneficiaries of the program's expansion.
If you do the math, roughly 15 million Americans could be in the newly created gray area. In 2010, when the act was passed, the Commonwealth Fund, an independent health care policy foundation, similarly calculated that the Medicaid expansion would benefit 12 million of the 15 million uninsured Americans under the poverty line.?
Judy Solomon, vice president for health policy at the nonpartisan Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, agreed with Ho that the decision means low-income adults could lose the promise of Medicaid coverage "even while people with somewhat higher incomes will be eligible for premium tax credits."?
Writing on the center's policy blog, Solomon said: "The poorest adults ? primarily parents and other adults working for low wages ? will be left out in the cold."

Genetic engineers and genomics researchers should welcome the news from the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab) where an international team of scientists has discovered a new and possibly more effective means of editing genomes. This discovery holds potentially big implications for advanced biofuels and therapeutic drugs, as genetically modified microorganisms, such as bacteria and fungi, are expected to play a key role in the green chemistry production of these and other valuable chemical products.
Jennifer Doudna, a biochemist with Berkeley Lab's Physical Biosciences Division and professor at the University of California (UC) Berkeley, helped lead the team that identified a double-RNA structure responsible for directing a bacterial protein to cleave foreign DNA at specific nucleotide sequences. Furthermore, the research team found that it is possible to program the protein with a single RNA to enable cleavage of essentially any DNA sequence.
"We've discovered the mechanism behind the RNA-guided cleavage of double-stranded DNA that is central to the bacterial acquired immunity system," says Doudna, who holds appointments with UC Berkeley's Department of Molecular and Cell Biology and Department of Chemistry, and is an investigator with the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI). "Our results could provide genetic engineers with a new and promising alternative to artificial enzymes for gene targeting and genome editing in bacteria and other cell types."
Doudna is one of two corresponding authors of a paper in the journal Science describing this work titled "A programmable dual RNA-guided DNA endonuclease in adaptive bacterial immunity." The second corresponding author is Emmanuelle Charpentier of the Laboratory for Molecular Infection Medicine at Sweden's Ume University. Other co-authors of the paper were Martin Jinek, Krzysztof Chylinski, Ines Fonfara and Michael Hauer.
Bacterial and archaeon microbes face a never-ending onslaught from viruses and invading circles of nucleic acid known as plasmids. To survive, the microbes deploy an adaptive-type nucleic acid-based immune system that revolves around a genetic element known as CRISPR, which stands for Clustered Regularly Interspaced Short Palindromic Repeats. Through the combination of CRISPRs and associated endonucleases, called CRISPR-associated "Cas" proteins, bacteria and archaeons are able to utilize small customized crRNA molecules (for CRISPR-derived RNA) to target and destroy the DNA of invading viruses and plasmids.
There are three distinct types of CRISPR/Cas immunity systems. Doudna and her colleagues studied the Type II system which relies exclusively upon one family of endonucleases for the targeting and cleaving of foreign DNA, the Cas9 proteins.
"For the Type II CRISPR/Cas system, we found that crRNA connects via base-pairs with a trans-activating RNA (tracrRNA), to form a two-RNA structure," Doudna says. "These dual RNA molecules (tracrRNA:crRNA) direct Cas9 proteins to introduce double-stranded DNA breaks at specific sites targeted by the crRNA-guide sequence."
Doudna and her colleagues demonstrated that the dual tracrRNA:crRNA molecules can be engineered as a single RNA chimera for site-specific DNA cleavage, opening the door to RNA-programmable genome editing.
"Cas9 binds to the tracrRNA:crRNA complex which in turn directs it to a specific DNA sequence through base-pairing between the crRNA and the target DNA," Doudna says. "Microbes use this elegant mechanism to cleave and destroy viruses and plasmids, but for genome editing, the system could be used to introduce targeted DNA changes into the genome.
Doudna notes that the "beauty of CRISPR loci" is that they can be moved around on plasmids.
"It is well-established that CRISPR systems can be transplanted into heterologous bacterial strains," she says. "Also, there is evidence to suggest that CRISPR loci are horizontally transferred in nature."
Doudna and her colleagues are now in the process of gathering more details on how the RNA-guided cleavage reaction works and testing whether the system will work in eukaryotic organisms including fungi, worms, plants and human cells.
"Although we've not yet demonstrated genome editing, given the mechanism we describe it is now a very real possibility," Doudna says.
