As a graduate student in theology and ethics, I have spent much time reflecting on the question of identity and the relationship between what we are and how we act. I have concluded that the best way to conceive of masculinity is the use of the ancient term eudaimonia, from classical virtue ethics.
The word ?virtue? itself comes from the Latin virtus, meaning strength masculinity or male. According to the tradition of virtue, being manly means living life so that one seeks to blossom as a man, and become what is good for a man.
Of course, there is no reason women can not follow the life of virtue! The main reason I call manhood eudaimonia is not because there is something in the life of virtue that is unattainable for women (which, incidentally, is what Aristotle actually says), but because men develop as male human beings.
Of course, women are totally capable of living virtuous lives! Virtue is not something that is specific only to men, nor is eudaimonia. Women are certainly full moral agents capable of exercising the virtue and vice, and obtaining the product excellence.
In Nicomachean Ethics, Book I, Aristotle defines eudaimonia as the activity of the soul (or rational activity) performed in accordance with virtue (Gk: arete, also translated as ?excellence?). The achievement of eudaimonia as a man means that you achieve the best traits of a male human and eliminate desires for things which prevent such achievement.
It is extremely important to emphasize the equality of women when it comes to the virtue of tradition, especially because the philosophers themselves have not always done that. For example, Aristotle wrote in his Politics that a woman has most of a man?s deliberative faculty, but without his authority.
I tend to talk about male spirituality and spirituality for men, not masculine spirituality. This is because everyone, both men and women, has traits that are associated with ?masculinity? and ?femininity? according to how our culture defines them. Aristotle?s list only includes the four cardinal virtues, of course.
The theological virtues come from scripture and Thomas Aquinas, who later systematized ethics and Christian theology. Even if you do not identify yourself as a Christian, the cardinal virtues are still a good place to start.
Manliness is not about a kind of strength or emotional disposition. It is not about being the great provider for one?s family. It is about striving for maturity in character and excellence in all things. As we grow in these things, so also we grow in manliness.

"If anyone is positioned to talk about the cloud, and the end of the PC era, and what is essentially granting access to all your data no matter what device you are working with, Salesforce is," said Charles King, principal analyst at Pund-IT.
"Salesforce has the experience. They've worked through the bugs. They have succeeded well beyond what many people have either intimated or assumed. As this era of cloud computing continues to grow, I expect them to profit from it."

Vala Afshar, chief customer officer at Enterasys Networks, said transforming into a social enterprise has fueled his company's growth, allowing it to operate with agility and deliver the level of engagement that its customers expect.

The strength of the student loans model vis?vis other forms of financial support is represented by its ability to guarantee both efficiency and equity. The implementation of student loans models around the world provides a lot of evidence to support this, but the measurement of their impact has usually been based on case studies, often focusing only on some aspects (equity, efficiency etc) of the policy.
There are no theoretical and methodological works able to design comparative evaluations. Our research attempts to plug this gap.
Firstly, we sought to define the minimal requirements that should be met in order to qualify a loan scheme as a public policy. Our postulate is that the main point is the existence of a credit guarantee provided by the state. Student loans become a public programme if, and only if, the guarantee is provided by a third (public) party. In other words there is state intervention aimed at solving a market failure: the inability of the financial system to lend money to a class of potential borrowers because they lack adequate collateral.
Given this preliminary assumption, we attempted to identify the problems that the public policy should solve. They are:
(a) Equity: ensuring access to higher education by students from a disadvantaged background. In many countries the low percentage of poor students is a social problem.
The introduction of a student loans scheme targeted at poor students could increase their educational participation, favouring social mobility.
(b) Finance: increasing higher education funding. The intervention of the state represents an answer to the problem of under-financed public universities. The participation of the student in meeting the cost of his/her education allows for an increase in tuition fees and therefore allows for the maintenance of high standards of teaching. The negative impact of tuition fees on higher education enrolments can be at least partly offset by a loan scheme.
(c) Labour market: promoting specific professional skills. The loan scheme can support the development of specific fields of study, depending on manpower priorities.
(d) Society: securing financial student autonomy. The introduction of a loan programme could grant a mutual independence both to the student and to his/her family because of the absence of economic constraints.
The next step was to construct different models of student loans programmes. A public policy can fail either because of problems in the implementation phase (lack of resources, changes in the environment etc), or because it was badly designed to start with.
Before entering the actual measurement of the policy outcome, therefore, it is necessary to understand if the programme was actually able to meet its goals, that is, if the different elements were combined in an appropriate way.
There is no plausible reason why the fact that the repayments are collected by a public agency or a commercial bank should increase or decrease the effectiveness of the policy, even if it can affect its efficiency.
The main characteristics of student loans programmes are their repayment mechanism, interest rates charged and the total amount of the loan. A fourth and a fifth element can be added: the eligibility rules, and the fact that the programme is designed as an open-ended entitlement or as a fixed amount subsidy programme.
As far as repayment mechanisms are concerned, student loans schemes can be mortgage-type (or conventional) or income-contingent. The first one foresees a repayment scheme in fixed installments for a fixed period of time. The second one is based on repayments as a percentage of a borrower?s income.
The second important element is represented by the interest rate, that is, by the existence of an actual subsidy (different from the mere existence of a state guarantee) or by the fact that the normal commercial rate is applied.
The third element is represented by the amount of the loan. Here the two polar alternatives are on the one hand the fact that the loan scheme covers only the tuition fees or, on the other hand, that it includes actual living costs.
The fourth element concerns the eligibility rules. This is a crucial element in the loan design. Here the two polar situations are one in which all prospective students can apply and another in which only people with specific characteristics (family income or academic track record) can become beneficiaries.
The fifth and final element is represented by the nature of the programme: the fact that it is an open-ended entitlement (all the potentially eligible beneficiaries can apply) or that is a fixed amount subsidy (a given amount of resources is available, rationed on the basis of the ?first come, first served? principle or any other criterion).
Taking these factors into account, we looked at four idealised models: namely, increasing equity, promoting students? autonomy, increasing universities? funding and adjusting to the needs of the labour market.
It is possible to assess if the design of a scheme is coherent and able to maximise the expected outcome.
Some of the schemes are more ?generous? than what they should be in theory. If this is a temporary measure in order to ?sell? the programmes to the target groups, then it is understandable and appropriate. But if these features persist over time, then the social efficiency of the policy will be weakened as the state will be investing more than it seems necessary.
Second, this framework can be used to find out the real goals of a loan policy, without the need to make reference to political rhetoric.

Once a coherent design has been found in a specific country, by assessing its effectiveness it is possible to ascertain if its failure or partial success is due to the implementation structure or the policy design.

Cops: Minnesota dad abandons son, disappears
LAKEVILLE, Minn.?? A father abandoned his 11-year-old son last month, telling him in a letter to move in with neighbors because their south Minnesota home was in foreclosure, according to a warrant complaint seeking his arrest.

Steven Alexander Cross, 60, left two notes for his son, according to the complaint charging him with a gross misdemeanor of child neglect. One letter said their home in Lakeville was going to be sold at a sheriff's sale and instructed the boy to take his PlayStation and go to a neighbor's house. The other asked the neighbors to take care of his son. The boy has been placed in foster care.
"If this paper is wet it's because I am crying so bad. You know your dad loves you more than anything," the letter said. Elsewhere he wrote: "There are many, many great years ahead for you. Not so for me."
The letter also revealed to the boy that his mother, whom his father had told him had died, is still alive. Investigators don't know where she is.
The boy, who awoke July 18 to find his father gone, will soon be placed permanently with a relative, County Attorney James Backstrom told the St. Paul Pioneer Press.
"For a parent to abandon a child under these circumstances ? it is both unusual and disturbing," Backstrom said.
Cross is believed to have fled to California but investigators say the trail has grown cold. Lakeville is 25 miles south of St. Paul.
'Heartbreaking'
Cross' two-story home was vacant this week, with foreclosure signs posted on the front door. The newspaper reported that a bank bought it for $336,925 in January.
Neighbors Traci Radtke said she was stunned. She said the family who took in the boy told her he broke down in tears when he arrived at their home.
"Heartbreaking," Radtke said. "It's a sad story."
The boy told police he didn't notice his father acting any differently on the night before he vanished. The boy also told a social worker he knew little about his family and that his father had told him his mother was dead.
Cross' letter said that wasn't true.
"Some good news is your mother is still alive. Though I do not think it is for the best," it said.
A petition for child protection names Katik Porter as the boy's mother. The boy said he last saw her when he was 2. Police don't know where she is.
Cross, a licensed architect, was awarded legal custody of the 11-year-old boy in 2001, according to the complaint. The mother received visitation privileges but apparently never used them. Those privileges were suspended in 2002.
Police tracked Cross' credit cards and bank accounts after he vanished but found no activity, prosecutors said. Investigators analyzed his home computer and found what looked like an Aug. 1 reservation for a three-night stay in the central California city of Morro Bay.
A week after Cross disappeared, a woman identifying herself as his ex-girlfriend called the family that had taken in the boy. She said Cross had emailed her from a library in Carmel, Calif., saying he was depressed and sleeping in the streets, the complaint said.
"I probably only have a couple of days ... No one I called would help me ... I didn't know what to do. I am scared and hopelessly depressed," Cross' email said, according to the complaint.
It's the last anyone heard from him.
