Over the past few months legendary two time, two division World Champion, Steve Collins, has been receiving some serious column inches in the press, due to his proposed return to action against Roy Jones Jr.

However, before the man known as the ?Celtic Warrior? gets to go toe-to-toe with Florida?s finest, he has a very different ?boxing related? role ahead of him, as the proud father ringside when his son Steve Jr. makes his professional debut, at York Hall in London this coming Friday.

Speaking from his Hertfordshire home earlier, the ?Celtic Warrior? spoke briefly on son Steve?s upcoming professional debut.

?First of all I?m absolutely delighted, I?m proud that Steve?s going to give boxing a shot.

He?s a terrific athlete, he?s definitely dedicated and a tough kid, you know, not just Boxing, he has a great career as a Rugby player too.

I personally feel he?s done the right thing, by going straight into the pro game, his style of boxing is right for the pros.

We thought he?d have to campaign as a Heavyweight, but because of the boxing training he?s dropped a lot of weight and so will fight as a Cruiserweight.

Boxing training is very different from Rugby training and he dropped quite a bit of weight.

All through training we thought he?d be Heavyweight, we were confident he?d be able to hold his own in the division. He?s not lost any of that power or strength so he should be very strong at Cruiserweight.

People are bound to expect him to fight like I did, but no, he has his own style, he?s very much a come forward boxer, he?ll come forward and crowd his opponent.

I think he?s a very exciting boxer to watch, the fans will love him. Stevie?s not the only Irish fighter on the show, so we?re hoping there will be a big turnout of Irish fans on Friday to cheer Stevie and the other boys on.?

As we reported previously, , recently crowned WBU Lightweight World Champion Stephen ??The Rock?? Ormond also stars on the card as well as a trio of Irish lads taking part on the night.

On his last visit to York Hall, in July last year, Ormond convincingly beat Canning Town?s Mickey Coveney. Of the back of this superb win, Ormond was presented the opportunity to face Hungarian Laszlo Robert Balogh for the vacant WBU crown.

On the 3rd May 2013, at the Carlton Hotel in Tyrrelstown, Dublin, on just his fourteenth pro outing Ormond stepped into the ring to face thirty three fight veteran Balogh.

Ormond utterly dominated the opening round, before going on to stop the Hungarian in just one minute and fifty four seconds of the second stanza.

On the 5th July the Dubliner will be facing tough Czech battler Michal Dufek.

Joining his fellow countryman on July 5th is Irish Light Middleweight Lee Murtagh who, even though he has fought the majority of his fifty career fights in the UK, will be making his first visit to the famous home of boxing in the English Capital, as preparation for his upcoming IBO Inter-Continental title battle.

R.J. Morris is a player easy to root for because he's like us, living out a childhood dream.

Morris is an offensive lineman who hails from Naperville, IL, and is one of those players who makes himself easy to root for. Like most of us, he grew up a Razorback fan but instead of remaining a just a fan, he headed to join the team as a preferred walk-on.

He stands at 6-foot-4, 312-pound and played guard and tackle in high school, and mind you, Bret Bielema loves these kids too because he was once a walk-on out of high school as well.

Now while most of us never had the opportunity to accept a preferred walk-on offer, I have respect for anyone in his shoes--at any level-- who pays his own way through school while experiencing the pressures of such a demanding extracurricular activity.

Croatia celebrates its EU membership

ZAGREB, Croatia (AP) ? Fireworks are ready and foreign leaders are arriving as Croatia celebrated on Sunday its entry into the European Union some 20 years after winning independence in a bloody civil war that shook the continent.

Croatia will become the 28th EU member on Monday, the bloc's first addition since Bulgaria and Romania joined in 2007. Croatia's membership marks a historic turning point for the small country, which went through carnage after declaring independence from the former Yugoslavia in 1991.

A decade back, when Croatia started negotiating the entry, the once war-torn country was overjoyed at the prospect of becoming a member of the European elite. But with the EU in deep financial turmoil and Croatia's own economy in recession for five consecutive years, the excitement has dimmed.

Thousands of people are expected to join in the celebrations across the country, including in the main square of the capital, Zagreb, where artists will perform for dozens of EU and regional leaders until midnight when big fireworks and the singing of Beethoven's Ode to Joy ? EU's anthem ? will mark the official entry into the bloc.

Customs posts will be removed from Croatia's borders with EU neighbors Slovenia and Hungary, while EU signs and flags will be put on its borders with non-EU states Bosnia, Serbia and Montenegro.

But overall, the festivities will be much more modest and less jubilant than when Bulgaria and Romania ? currently EU's poorest states ? became members. With the entry, Croatia ? a nation of 4.2 million people ? will become the third poorest country in the EU.

"There are not too many festivities because the general situation is not brilliant," Croatian President Ivo Josipovic told The Associated Press in a recent interview. "We have to develop our economy, take care of those people who are jobless now, and there is no time and money for big celebrations."

With an unemployment rate hovering at around 20 percent, plunging living standards, endemic corruption among its political elite and its international credit rating reduced to junk, many Croats are not in the mood to celebrate.

Some economists have warned that Croatia could seek an EU financial bailout as soon as it becomes a member. But Croatia's Foreign Minister Vesna Pusic rejected those claims, saying that the country would qualify for bailouts only if it is a member of the eurozone, a separate 17-country group that uses the EU's common currency, the euro.

"Croatia, and Croatia is not a member of the eurozone, and will not become a member of the eurozone until all the conditions are met."

President of the European Parliament Martin Schulz called Croatia's accession a "historic day."

"EU membership will offer no magic solution to the crisis," he said in a statement. "But it will help to lift many people out of poverty and modernize the economy. "

Protest movement Occupy Croatia is planning an anti-EU march Sunday evening, saying in a statement that "the European Union is not a solution to our problems."

"The entry into the European Union is an economic genocide over the people living in our country," the group said in a statement, blasting the EU as a "union tailored for rich corporations and their politicians."

The EU is in the grips of a recession, with many countries struggling to stimulate growth while grappling with a debt crisis that has led governments to slash spending and raise taxes. The EU countries account for 60 percent for Croatia's exports, which has sent the Balkan country's economy into a steady decline.

"It's important that we remember that Croatia is joining at the strangest time for the European Union in history," said Paul Stubbs, a senior research fellow at the Institute of Economics in Zagreb. He said Croatians "might see some increased prices, some increased competition, I wouldn't expect some huge increase in investment overnight."

But, the pro-EU voices in Croatia note that joining the bloc means Croatians could find jobs in more prosperous EU countries, that their country could attract more foreign investment, and that the EU's leadership in Brussels could help keep widespread corruption and economic mismanagement in check.

"We really had no choice," said Nino Vidic, a Zagreb resident. "Croatia is a small country, and logically as a Catholic country, we strive toward the West."

Biomarker predicts risk of breast cancer recurrence after tamoxifen treatment

June 29, 2013 ? A biomarker reflecting expression levels of two genes in tumor tissue may be able to predict which women treated for estrogen-receptor (ER)-positive breast cancer should receive a second estrogen-blocking medication after completing tamoxifen treatment. In their report being published online in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute, Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) Cancer Center investigators describe finding that the HOXB13/IL17BR ratio can indicate which women are at risk for cancer recurrence after tamoxifen and which are most likely to benefit from continuing treatment with the aromatase inhibitor letrozole (Femara).

"Most patients with early-stage, ER-positive breast cancer remain cancer-free after five years of tamoxifen treatment, but they remain at risk of recurrence for 15 years or longer after their initial treatment," says Dennis Sgroi, MD, of the MGH Cancer Center and Department of Pathology, lead and corresponding author of the report. "Our biomarker identifies the subgroup of patients who continue to be at risk of recurrence after tamoxifen treatment and who will benefit from extended therapy with letrozole, which should allow many women to avoid unnecessary extended treatment."

Previous research by Sgroi's team, in collaboration with investigators from bioTheranostics Inc., discovered that the ratio between levels of expression of two genes -- HOXB13 and IL17BR -- in tumor tissue predicted the risk of recurrence of ER-positive, lymph-node-negative breast cancer, whether or not the patient was treated with tamoxifen. The current study of patients from MA.17, the highly successful clinical trial of letrozole, was designed to evaluate the usefulness of the HOXB13/IL17BR ratio for both prognosis -- predicting which tamoxifen-treated remained patients at risk of recurrence -- and for identifying who could benefit from continued treatment with letrozole.

To answer those questions the investigators analyzed primary tumor samples and patient data from the placebo-controlled MA.17 trial, which confirmed the ability of extended letrozole therapy to improve survival after the completion of tamoxifen treatment. Tissue samples were available from 83 patients whose tumors recurred during the study period -- 31 who had received letrozole and 52 in the placebo group -- and 166 patients with no recurrence, 91 of whom had received letrozole, with 75 getting the placebo. Analysis of the tumor samples revealed that a high HOXB13/IL17BR ratio -- meaning the expression level of HOXB13 is greater than that of IL17BR -- predicts an increased risk for tumor recurrence after tamoxifen therapy, but that elevated risk drops significantly if a patient receives letrozole

Paul E. Goss, MD, PhD, director of the Breast Cancer Research Program at the MGH Cancer Center and a co-author of the report, explains, "This discovery means that about 60 percent of women with the most common kind of breast cancer can be spared unnecessary treatment with the concommitant side effects and costs. But more importantly, the 40 percent of patients who are at risk of recurrence can now be identified as needing continued therapy with letrozole, and many will be spared death from breast cancer." He and Sgroi note that their findings need to be validated by additional studies before they can be put into clinical practice.

Fighting Anti-Choice/Anti-Access Abortion Bills in Texas: THE NEXT STEP (#HB2 #SB9)

There is a lot for me to say about what has happened over the last week in Texas but since Governor Rick Perry has called a second special session, I?m looking forward as much as possible. (though I do want to say THANK YOU to my fellow Texans)

First, answers to some questions about how the special session works.

Will there be another filibuster??

Most likely not.

The special session is 30 days long. During the first special session, Perry did not introduce the abortion legislation until about half way through. That is a big reason that we were able to draw out the process to the point where Davis could filibuster and we could yell to push past that midnight deadline this past Tuesday.

This time, the TX GOP will have 30 full days to move through the legislation, a?significantly?longer period of time.

What will happen on Monday in the legislature??

When I asked my friend who knows about these things if anything critically important will happen on Monday, I was told: ?It is possible, but unlikely.?

The decision to waive the regular 2/3 rule to pass legislation and instead implement a majority vote will likely happen on Monday. We expect that there will be a great deal of debate and rules query about this and the mockery of the rules that happend on Tuesday night. Senator Kirk Watson and Senator Kevin Eltife have both filed a blocker bill (the bill at the top of the calendar that creates a need for 2/3rds vote to take other bills up before it). Not sure if we can be in the chamber for this. I have no details yet on that.

What legislation is already on the docket?

New legislation has been introduced: HB 2 on the house side which is the same as SB 5 was when it came out of house?committee, including the 20-week ban. ?Dan Patrick (who has, since Tuesday, announced that he?d like to be Texas? next Lt Gov) has filed SB 9, a stand alone medical abortion bill.

Legislation can continue to be filed before the session starts and then during the session so this may not be all of it. We?ll see.

Will there be more hearings?

Yes, most likely. They don?t HAVE to hear testimony in the House. BUT we expect that they will hear testimony in both chambers (though Lt. Gov Dewhurst is now threatening to not allow us to participate in those hearings).

We should be prepared for them to move quickly through the process of committee hearing, voting in one chamber, committee hearing, voting in the other chamber.

How do they decide the order of events? How does setting the calendar work?

They don?t ever set a calendar exactly, the process flows from point to point, with certain minimum timelines in between.

So, STAY TUNED. As soon as we know the different points, we will get that information out. I am working on creating a calendar on this site that will list the events based on date, time, and level of importance so that people who are deciding when to come in from out of town or to take time off work will know the most critical time for them to show up.

New Jersey's Christie vetoes Medicaid expansion bill

(Reuters) - New Jersey Governor Chris Christie on Friday vetoed a bill that attempted to make the state's expansion of Medicaid eligibility permanent under the healthcare law known as Obamacare, his office said on Friday.

Christie's office announced he vetoed eight bills that "would add potentially hundreds of millions of dollars to state and local budgets." He also signed a $32.9 billion budget and three other bills, his office said in a statement.

Among the bills he vetoed was one dealing with Medicaid expansion under the U.S. Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, President Barack Obama's signature healthcare law known as Obamacare.

Christie, a critic of Obamacare, said in February he would accept federal money to expand Medicaid in New Jersey, and the state budget he signed on Friday included $227 million in such funds.

Democrats in the state Senate and Assembly had passed a bill seeking to make that Medicaid expansion permanent, but Christie vetoed it, a spokesman for the governor said.

The vetoed bill would have removed the flexibility to opt out of the Medicaid expansion if the federal government changed the terms of the current favorable matching rate, the spokesman said. The governor had discussed publicly his intention to maintain this flexibility when he signed onto the expansion, the spokesman said.

Restaurant Review: Horton Grange, Berwick Hill, Ponteland ...

Eating Out has gone a bit up-market this week.

We?re dining at a country manor, on the outskirts of Newcastle, in very pleasant surroundings indeed.

Horton Grange is in Berwick Hill, not far from Ponteland and Dinnington, and is definitely a place worth checking out.

I?ve cycled past it many a time when trying to lose the bulge that comes as a result of doing this page and had always wondered what it was like inside.

When a good friend of mine suggested having a catch-up dinner there, I didn?t need to think twice.

So it was we found ourselves at Horton Grange midweek.

It was a glorious sunny evening, making the setting all the more special.

We started by studying the menu in the lounge - a large area with comfy sofas, perfect for passing? the time.

Kerry and Stefan looked after us for the evening, and top marks to both of them.

We went for the a la carte selection, but there is also a Dine In Style set option, for ?29.50 a head, including a glass of champagne and canapes.

Back to a la carte, though, and my friend was intrigued by the parmesan and cheddar beignets with red pepper compote (?8.50), as she didn?t have a clue what beignets were (they are like fritters, basically).

I chose the risotto of smoked Finnan haddock, with parmesan and lemon oil (?9).

We were seated in the spacious restaurant which is basically a conservatory,? full of light, with splendid views into the grounds.

There were several other diners, and one couple made the most of the gardens after their meal, finishing their wine outside.

Both our choices proved a hit. The risotto was actually very light, perfect for a starter, and the fish was oozing with flavour. The dressing set it off wonderfully.

As for those fritters, sorry, beignets, they were? tasty and the portion, again, was spot on for a starter.

Other options for starters included crisp free range egg with English asparagus and Parma ham soldiers and pate de campagne.

For main course I had 8oz? bistro rump steak (?21).

I asked for it well-done, and it was cooked to perfection. With the steak, which was simply delicious, came slow roast tomatoes, a great complement, and wonderful thick cut chips, and a rich but not overpowering Bearnaise sauce. Stunning.

My friend decided on a first for her ? crispy duck leg confit (?21.50). Living life on the edge, it proved a winner all the way.? The duck was superb, as was the buttered French beans, gratin potato (I can never get my own gratin potatoes like these, she muttered) puy lentils and mustard cream. A winning combination through and through.

It usually takes a lot for me to convince my mate to have dessert - but she was enjoying her meal so much she decided she would simply "have to give it a go".

Her sticky toffee pudding with hot toffee sauce (?8) was gone in the blink of an eye ? she enjoyed it so much. It was the first time I had ever seen her finish a dessert.

My vanilla creme brulee (?7.50) was exquisite, with a light smattering of raspberries on top.

All in all a terrific meal. They do Sunday lunches as well, so I must give that a go some time.

The owners also have the Croft Hotel in Croft-on-Tees ? might just have to make the journey down there too.

Exploding Bullets Frozen In Plexiglass Are Terrifyingly Beautiful

Just because a piece of glass might claim to be "bulletproof" doesn't necessarily mean that it's actually, well, bulletproof. But if your bullet-resistant glass is sturdy enough, that speeding bullet will usually just end up lodged in layers of polycarbonate. That's what intrigues photographer Deborah Bay.

She recently found herself struck by the unexpected beauty of a bullet lodged in a slab of plexiglass. Speaking to The Smithsonian, Bay explains:

I thought it was intriguing. You could see all the fragments of metal. You could see the spray of the shattered plastic and then you could see the trajectory lines that were running through the panel of plexiglass.

Eventually, Bay recruited the help of some friendly cops, who gladly obliged her by shooting off a veritable cornucopia of bullets into bulletproof, plexiglass panels. Then, moving the glass to a black backdrop, she used a medium format camera with a macro lens and creatively colored lighting to produce the series entitled "The Big Bang." As The Smithsonian notes:

The patterns that the projectiles leave on the plexiglass on impact look like galaxies, stars and meteors flying through space. The more the photographer combs collections of images taken by the Hubble Space Telescope, the more she sees the resemblance. It?s this intuitive leap from the macro to the cosmic that inspired the series? clever name.

While undeniably beautiful, the photographs are also highly topical?gun control currently being a major point of partisan contention. And Bay is very aware of this, particularly as a resident of Texas, a state with 51 million registered firearms. The irony of the title paired with such a destructive subject matter highlight's Bay's ultimate goal: ?I just want people to think about what these bullets can do.?

Reputation.com, the online identity and privacy startup, has bought PaperKarma, a mobile app built to help users identify and then stop spammy snail mail. In a letter to users (embedded below), PaperKarma?s founders Sean Mortazavi and Brendan Ribera say that the app will continue to work as before; but Reputation.com notes that it will also be tapping into the startup?s software expertise for a wider remit: building up Reputation.com?s mobile capabilities, and applying PaperKarma?s address-tracking algorithms to online data as well.

?With the addition of PaperKarma, we?ve added mobile capabilities to our portfolio that empower our customers to easily take control of unsolicited contact from vendors and marketers,? notes Reputation.com CEO and founder Michael Fertik in the official announcement.

Apple patent stuffs two ports into one, saves space in your laptop

Port space is very limited on laptops, but Apple has just received a patent that could solve that problem in the simplest way possible: cramming two ports into one. Expanding on what we've seen with some multi-format card readers, Apple has designed a layered port whose staggered electrical contacts and overall shape let it accept two different connectors. While the company uses the combination of a USB port and SD card reader as its example, the patent could theoretically apply to any two technologies that make sense together. The real question is whether or not Apple will use its invention at all. The Mac maker has a few slim portables that could use some expansion, but there's no evidence that the company will tweak its computer designs in the near future.

Re. "A true map of the brain would reveal how information flows..." - superb point, but all we have are some traces of electrical signal flows through interconnected networks of neurons. There certainly seems to be some extensive control mechanism (software) that determines how signals flow among which available connections. We have no idea what information is represented by those signal flows, how it's stored and recalled, and how it influences our actions - just for starters.

We cannot comprehend what our computers are doing from a map of circuit interconnections or even a trace of electrical signal flows within the circuits. We cannot determine precisely what our computers are doing even with list of all the programs that are loaded and copies of their instruction source codes. With a list of all the programs and data loaded into storage we might have a chance, given enough computers and time to perform the necessary analyses. Even then, the feasibility of such an undertaking could rival the sequencing of the genome, just to find that I'm just entering this comment into your comment entry box...

There's an enormous amount of critical information about the brain that we're not even aware of yet - information that having an enormously costly, highly detailed map of brain physiology will not even suggest to us...

Watchdog warns of waste in Afghan aircraft buy

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The Pentagon is spending more than three-quarters of a billion dollars to buy Russian-made helicopters and other aircraft for an Afghan aviation unit that lacks the troops and expertise to operate and maintain the equipment, a government watchdog warned.

The Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction said in a report Friday these shortcomings mean the helicopters and fixed-wing aircraft destined for the Afghan Special Mission Wing "could be left sitting on runways in Afghanistan, rather than supporting critical missions, resulting in waste of U.S. funds." The report recommended putting the purchases on hold until the Afghans develop the capacity to support the aircraft.

The findings are sure to reverberate on Capitol Hill, where there is stiff opposition to the purchase of the Mi-17 helicopters from Rosoboronexport, the state-run Russian arms exporter that is a top weapons supplier to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

The Pentagon announced June 17 that Rosoboronexport had been awarded a $554 million contract for 30 Mi-17s to be used by the Special Mission Wing, a move that came just days after the House approved a 2014 defense policy bill that included a prohibition on contracts with the Russian agency. The Senate Armed Services Committee included a similar ban in its version of the bill.

The defense policy bill for 2013 also barred the Pentagon from using funds from that fiscal year for contracts with Rosoboronexport. But the Pentagon said money from the 2012 fiscal year was being used for the Mi-17 acquisition, so the restriction does not apply.

A Defense Department spokesman said there was an "urgent, near-term need" to buy the wing the Mi-17s, a multimission aircraft designed to operate at high altitudes and uniquely suited for the wing.

"Careful consideration of all the information available to the department confirms that it would be in the public interest to procure the Mi-17s needed for the (wing) from Rosoboronexport," Army Lt. Col. Jim Gregory said in a statement.

In addition to the Mi-17s, the Pentagon is spending $218 million on 18 PC-12 cargo aircraft from the Sierra Nevada Corp. of Sparks, Nev., to allow the Special Mission Wing to perform counterterrorism and counternarcotics missions, the report said.

The special inspector general is recommending the purchase be suspended until the wing's staffing, recruiting and training problems are resolved. Chief among them is finalizing a memorandum of understanding between the Afghan interior and defense ministries that would give the military control of the wing. But the document remains unsigned due largely to the interior ministry's "resistance to surrendering authority" over the wing, according to the report.

Michael Dumont, the deputy assistant defense secretary for Afghanistan, Pakistan and Central Asia, said in comments included in the report that delaying the purchase of the aircraft until the agreement was signed "would unacceptably delay our efforts to develop the (wing) into a capable force."

The wing was to have 806 personnel by mid-2015, but as of late January had just 180, according to the report.

Filling out the wing's ranks won't be easy, the report said, due to challenges of finding Afghan recruits who are literate in their own language, competent in English and can pass the strict, 18- to 20-month U.S. vetting process that includes eliminating candidates who have ties to criminal or insurgent activities.

The flow of Afghan trainees from helicopter flight training at Fort Rucker, Ala., to more intense training in the Czech Republic "has been slow and uneven, ranging from a low of two up to eight trainees at a time," according to the special inspector general.

The report blamed a lack of steady funding for the training from the Defense Department, failed background checks for prospective pilots and flight engineers, and the Czech government's requirement that each Afghan trainee have a certificate signed by Afghan authorities.

Compensation, especially for mechanics, is another barrier to recruitment because Afghans with a basic command of English are in high demand and can get higher pay elsewhere, the report said.

Another key shortcoming is the dearth of pilots capable of flying at night, when most counterterrorism missions are conducted. As of late January, only seven of the 47 pilots assigned to the wing were fully mission qualified to fly with night vision goggles, the report said.

Hold the medicinal lettuce

June 26, 2013 ? In 2011 and 2012, research from China's Nanjing University made international headlines with reports that after mice ate, bits of genetic material from the plants they'd ingested could make it into their bloodstreams intact and turn the animals' own genes off. The surprising results from Chen-Yu Zhang's group led to speculation that genetic illness might one day be treated with medicinal food, but also to worry that genetically modified foods might in turn modify consumers in unanticipated ways.

Now, though, a research team at Johns Hopkins reports that Zhang's results were likely a false positive that resulted from the technique his group used. The new study, the Johns Hopkins group says, bolsters the case of skeptics who argued that genetic material from food would have little chance of surviving the digestive system, much less crossing the intestinal lining to enter the bloodstream. The study appears in the July issue of RNA Biology.

"It's disappointing in a sense -- it would open up so many therapeutic possibilities if microRNAs from food really could get into our blood and regulate our genes," says Kenneth Witwer, Ph.D., of the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine's Institute for Basic Biomedical Sciences, who led the new study. But beyond the fact that people won't be picking up prescription lettuce at the pharmacy anytime soon, he adds, the larger lesson is that scientific research's capacity for self-correction is alive and well.

Witwer said his group was intrigued by the earlier results, in which Zhang's group focused on microRNAs, molecules that are a chemical cousin of DNA. Rather than storing genetic information as DNA does, their primary role is to intervene in so-called "gene expression," the process of using genes' blueprints to build proteins. Because they affect whether and how much genes are actually used, microRNAs wield tremendous power, Witwer notes, "so it was startling to think that microRNAs from plants could get into the bloodstream, get into tissues, and regulate genes in those tissues."

Witwer teamed up with colleagues to check the results with a similar experiment of their own. They bought soy-based smoothies at a grocery store and tested their microRNA content, then fed the smoothies to macaques and took samples of the animals' blood.

Knowing that the concentrations of any plant microRNAs in the blood would be too low to measure directly, they used a common technique called polymerase chain reaction (PCR) to bring up the concentration of the genetic material. PCR is designed so that only certain fragments of genetic material in a sample -- the ones researchers choose to target -- will be copied. Zhang's studies had also used PCR to look for plant microRNAs.

Just as Zhang had, the Johns Hopkins team found what appeared to be the targeted plant microRNAs in the macaques' blood. But when they ran the experiment several times, they got highly variable results: Sometimes the microRNAs were present in low concentrations, and sometimes not at all. In addition, the samples from before the macaques drank the smoothies were just as likely to have the microRNAs as were the post-smoothie samples -- a result that just didn't make sense if the source of the microRNAs was the plant material in the drinks.

To Witwer, the results indicated that what he was seeing was not the targeted plant microRNAs, but fragments of the macaques' own genetic material that were similar enough to the targeted segments that the PCR copied them at low levels.

To test this, the team used a new technique in which PCR takes place in tiny aerosolized droplets rather than in a test tube. The advantage, Witwer says, is that by effectively running tens or hundreds of thousands of reactions at the same time, researchers can see whether the outcomes of those reactions are consistent -- in other words, whether the results are meaningful or just a fluke. In this case, the results were all over the place, indicating that plant microRNAs weren't really present.

At the same time, Witwer cautions, it remains possible that very low levels of microRNAs could enter the blood. Even if this happened, though, he says it is unlikely that such small numbers of molecules could affect gene expression. Additional studies will be needed to determine whether low-level transfer occurs and whether any plant RNAs serve a function in the body.

World's food supply got a little more plentiful: Resistance gene found against ug99 wheat stem rust pathogen

June 27, 2013 ? The world's food supply got a little more plentiful thanks to a scientific breakthrough.

Eduard Akhunov, associate professor of plant pathology at Kansas State University, and his colleague, Jorge Dubcovsky from the University of California-Davis, led a research project that identified a gene that gives wheat plants resistance to one of the most deadly races of the wheat stem rust pathogen -- called Ug99 -- that was first discovered in Uganda in 1999. The discovery may help scientists develop new wheat varieties and strategies that protect the world's food crops against the wheat stem rust pathogen that is spreading from Africa to the breadbaskets of Asia and can cause significant crop losses.

Other Kansas State University researchers include Harold Trick, professor of plant pathology; Andres Salcedo, doctoral candidate in genetics from Mexico; and Cyrille Saintenac, a postdoctoral research associate currently working at the Institut National de la Recherche Agronomique in France. The project was funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture and Borlaug Global Rust Initiative.

The team's study, "Identification of Wheat Gene Sr35 that Confers Resistance to Ug99 Stem Rust Race Group," appears in the journal Science.

It identifies the stem rust resistance gene named Sr35, and appears alongside a study from an Australian group that identifies another effective resistance gene called Sr33.

"This gene, Sr35, functions as a key component of plants' immune system," Akhunov said. "It recognizes the invading pathogen and triggers a response in the plant to fight the disease."

Wheat stem rust is caused by a fungal pathogen. According to Akhunov, since the 1950s wheat breeders have been able to develop wheat varieties that are largely resistant to this pathogen. However, the emergence of strain Ug99 in Uganda in 1999 devastated crops and has spread to Kenya, Ethiopia, Sudan and Yemen, though has yet to reach the U.S.

"Until that point, wheat breeders had two or three genes that were so efficient against stem rust for decades that this disease wasn't the biggest concern," Akhunov said. "However, the discovery of the Ug99 race of pathogen showed that changes in the virulence of existing pathogen races can become a huge problem."

As a first line of defense, wheat breeders and researchers began looking for resistance genes among those that had already been discovered in the existing germplasm repositories, he said.

"The Sr35 gene was one of those genes that was discovered in einkorn wheat grown in Turkey," Akhunov said. "Until now, however, we did not know what kind of gene confers resistance to Ug99 in this wheat accession."

To identify the resistance gene Sr35, the team turned to einkorn wheat that is known to be resistant to the Ug99 fungal strain. Einkorn wheat has limited economic value and is cultivated in small areas of the Mediterranean region. It has been replaced by higher yielding pasta and bread wheat varieties.

Researchers spent nearly four years trying to identify the location of the Sr35 gene in the wheat genome, which contains nearly two times more genetic information than the human genome.

Once the researchers narrowed the list of candidate genes, they used two complimentary approaches to find the Sr35 gene. First, they chemically mutagenized the resistant accession of wheat to identify plants that become susceptible to the stem rust pathogen.

"It was a matter of knocking out each candidate gene until we found the one that made a plant susceptible," Akhunov said. "It was a tedious process and took a lot of time, but it was worth the effort."

Next, researchers isolated the candidate gene and used biotechnical approaches to develop transgenic plants that carried the Sr35 gene and showed resistance to the Ug99 race of stem rust.

Now that the resistance gene has been found, Akhunov and colleagues are looking at what proteins are transferred by the fungus into the wheat plants and recognized by the protein encoded by the Sr35 gene. This will help researchers to better understand the molecular mechanisms behind infection and develop new approaches for controlling this devastating pathogen.

When we got hands-on with the Windows 8.1 preview earlier this week, it was on a Surface Pro -- i.e., an x86 PC running full Windows. Until today, though, we hadn't had a chance to try the software on a device running Windows RT. Well, fortunately for us, Microsoft has a row full of freshly updated Surface RT units on display here at Build, so we took the opportunity poke around a little. As you'd expect, Windows RT 8.1 has all the trappings of the full Windows version, including an always-there Start button and new apps like Food & Drink and Health & Fitness. What's sort of interesting is that you can boot to the desktop here as well, just as you would on Windows 8.1. (We say "interesting" because, well, how urgently do you need the desktop on RT anyway?) The desktop also still comes with Office apps pinned to the Taskbar, in case you were wondering.

Performance seems much the same as before, particularly because we were handling last year's Surface RT, which still ships with a Tegra 3 SoC. Browsing and loading tabs in IE11 feels snappy but then again, IE11 was supposed to be a tick faster than IE10. Overall, navigating the OS can still feel slightly sluggish, but the build we tried is at least stable. Other than that, it looks like we'll have to wait for some new ARM chips before we can revisit performance in Windows RT. Until then, don't expect us to write another 4,000 words on the subject.

This story is not about space, exactly. But it is about rockets?the model kind?and the kids who may grow up to launch the real thing into space someday.

A trio of teenage Texas model rocketeers beat out teams from France and the U.K. to claim top honors at this year?s International Rocketry Competition. The U.S. team, from a 4-H club in Georgetown, Texas, won the June 21st fly-off at the Paris Air Show. They earned their spot in the international showdown by besting 99 other American teams.

The contest required rocket kids to send a raw egg into the sky, as close to 750 feet altitude as possible, in a flight lasting between 48 and 50 seconds?and bring the egg safely back to earth. Brothers Mark and Matthew Janecka and their teammate Daniel Kelton won the international contest with a flight that only peaked at 703 feet, but lasted a textbook 49.18 seconds.

After the competition the Texas teens got to meet with French president Francois Hollande. The president wore a dark suit and tie, and the boys from Texas wore windbreakers and cowboy hats. Fitting for space cowboys.

Microsoft today officially launched Windows 8.1 Preview, the first public beta of its flagship operating system's next version, at its Build developer conference in San Francisco today. For Microsoft, Windows 8.1 represents a chance to fix some of the issues with Windows 8. The fact that Microsoft is bringing back the Start button and now allowing users to boot right into the desktop is a sign that the company has been listening to its users. In many ways, 8.1 -- even in this Preview version -- is what Windows 8 should have been.

SKorean president in Beijing for summit with Xi

BEIJING (AP) ? The South Korean president's visit to China's capital Thursday brought together North Korea's archrival and its biggest ally for meetings that will put Pyongyang under greater pressure to rejoin nuclear disarmament talks.

President Park Geun-hye arrived in Beijing for a four-day visit that marks the first formal discussions between her and the new Chinese administration led by President Xi Jinping and Premier Li Keqiang.

Park, a self-taught Mandarin speaker, has said she is keen to enlist the Chinese leaders in the drive for new North Korean denuclearization discussions that also would include the U.S., Russia, and Japan.

"I will try to make cooperation between the two countries more substantial and harden Korea-China cooperation for the sake of attaining the goal of North Korea's denuclearization so as to make North Korea come forward for sincere talks," Park was quoted as saying earlier this week by South Korean media.

The China-hosted talks with Pyongyang have been stalled since 2009 over how to verify North Korea is fulfilling its commitments to dismantle its nuclear facilities.

Park was scheduled to meet with Xi later Thursday and with Li on Friday.

Teaming up with China offers some hope for success, with Beijing showing signs of frustration with its neighbor and longstanding communist ally. China was angered by the North's long-range rocket launch late last year and carrying out of a third nuclear test earlier this year, and it has since supported tightening U.N. sanctions, cracked down on North Korean banking activity and urged Pyongyang to return to disarmament talks.

"We hope all sides involved can continue to work toward returning to the six-party talks and make concrete efforts to resolve the relevant issues, achieve denuclearization, preserve peace and stability in the peninsula through dialogue and negotiation within the framework of the six-party talks," Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying said Wednesday.

While China is North Korea's biggest source of diplomatic and economic support, their trade and other interactions dwarf those which China maintains with the South. Ordinary Chinese are also big fans of South Korean pop culture and high-tech wares, and there is a growing sentiment among urban intellectuals that China should not sacrifice international credibility for the sake of coddling Pyongyang.

However, corralling Kim Jong Un's mercurial North Korean regime into new talks will not prove easy.

When the top North Korean negotiator Kim Kye Gwan visited Beijing earlier this month for talks, Chinese analysts said afterward that Pyongyang seemed more interested in improving its damaged ties with China than in swiftly moving toward new six-nation talks.

Park has said that any resumption of talks must be preceded by signs that the North is serious about following through on its disarmament commitments, echoing the position of the U.S. Washington does not want to be drawn into talks that serve only to relieve pressure on Pyongyang, provide it a platform to seek much-needed aid, and buy it more time to further its nuclear weapons program.

While Beijing has remained neutral over recent developments, Chinese scholars say Xi's government will seek an intermediary role to create conditions for a restoration of talks. They warn, however, that Beijing would oppose harsher sanctions or other measures that could spark a backlash from Pyongyang or further destabilize the regime of the young and inexperienced Kim, who took over following his father's death 18 months ago.

"It's very hard to say whether the meeting will produce any new proposals, but, following the third nuclear test, I think China and every other country involved realizes the seriousness of the need to get North Korea back into talks," said Zhang Liangui, a researcher with the ruling Communist Party's main research and training institute in Beijing.

While Pyongyang will be watching Park's Beijing interactions carefully, her visit is a "normal diplomatic activity" and North Korea has "neither the need, nor the right to cast aspersions" about it, Zhang said.

Park's visit should also help smooth over strains in ties between China and South Korea over China's refusal to criticize Pyongyang following the sinking of a South Korean navy ship in early 2010 and shelling of one of its islands by a North Korean artillery unit later that year.

Park's appreciation for Chinese culture should also help foster positive relations. The Beijing stage of her trip, which includes meetings with business groups and a speech to university students, is to be followed by an excursion to the ancient capital of Xi'an, a cultural hub that is also a favorite destination for South Korean investors.

Park is traveling with a record 71-strong business delegation, highlighting the close economic ties that have lifted China above the U.S. as South Korea's top trading partner. Two-way trade hit $215 billion last year, with South Korea's exports of semiconductors, mobile phones, cars and industrial products giving it a trade surplus of more than $50 billion.

Business delegates include leaders of South Korean industry, including the chairmen of Hyundai Motor Group and LG Group.

In the past, Silva has worked with Steven Seagal. The movie star was even cageside for Silva's fights and took credit for teaching him the kick that knocked out Vitor Belfort. But with this movie and work with Kreese mean we'll be hearing Silva yell, "Cobra Kai, never die!" at UFC 162?
