China paper says U.S. solar complaint driven by envy (Reuters)

BEIJING (Reuters) ? An anti-dumping complaint filed by U.S. solar firms against their Chinese counterparts is driven by envy at China's rapid growth in the field and goes against global efforts to fight climate change, a major state-run newspaper said on Sunday.

Seven U.S. solar manufacturers this month asked the Obama administration to impose duties of more than 100 percent on China solar imports, which they said were unfairly undercutting U.S. prices and destroying American jobs.

In a front-page commentary, The China Energy News, published by Communist Party mouthpiece the People's Daily, said this was a foolish, misguided attempt at trade protectionism driven by jealousy.

"In the space of just five years, the rapid development of the Chinese companies has attracted envious eyes overseas," wrote Wang Yuehai, secretary general of the All China Federation of Industry and Commerce's new energy commission.

President Barack Obama had failed to live up to his promises to boost growth by supporting the renewable energy sector, leaving China to lead the way, he said.

"The U.S. solar industry is using the awkwardness of the Obama government to try and force it into trade protectionism and attack the rapid development of China's solar industry," Wang wrote.

The complaint also runs counter to the consensus reached by the two countries to develop clean energy, an important sector to support as the world tries to stimulate growth at a time of global financial crisis, he added.

The controversy comes at a sensitive time in U.S.-China trade relations, which are plagued by U.S. concerns over market access in China, Beijing's treatment of intellectual property rights, and stern debate over the value of China's currency.

China's Commerce Ministry has already warned the United States not to take protectionist measures over the solar energy issue that could harm the global economy.

The U.S. companies' complaint -- filed with the International Trade Commission and the U.S. Department of Commerce against the world's no. 2 economy -- has drawn scepticism from within the industry, as many fear a trade war could disrupt growth.

Many executives from the United States and Europe have complained privately for years about China's impact on solar markets, but most have also said the business had become so globalised that penalising one country would not help companies that are struggling to survive.

Analysis: Three ways to invest in China without fear (Reuters)

NEW YORK (Reuters) ? Everyone's obsessed with the euro zone these days, and every little rumor sends global stock markets into wild gyrations. But here's a little secret: If you really want to know what could blow up your portfolio for years to come, forget Europe. What you should really be concerned about is a potential Chinese bust.

Investors have long taken for granted the growth of China's eye-popping gross domestic product, and indeed the nation's emergence has been one of the most stunning stories in economic history. But recent numbers show some widening economic cracks: The Chinese stock market is near its two-year low; third-quarter GDP growth slowed to 9.1 percent, a continued deceleration after years of double-digit gains; and the government's stockpiling of foreign-exchange reserves has been slowing to a crawl.

"Some of the leading indicators, including credit growth and property sales, have shown signs of weakness in recent months," says David Cui, a China strategist at Bank of America Merrill Lynch Global Research who was ranked first in Institutional Investor's 2011 All-China Survey. "As a result, we believe the risk has risen considerably. Many of these risks are intertwined -- which makes any outbreak anywhere dangerous."

Ah, real estate. Just as it took down the American economy, now it has the potential to do the same for our friends across the Pacific. Bearish observers single out the twin trends of easy credit and rampant overbuilding -- sound familiar? -- that have led to "ghost cities," a blizzard of new developments and skyscrapers that have been erected and now lie virtually empty.

Surely that can't be sustainable. Some Chinese officials have talked smugly about having abolished the usual business cycle of boom and bust, after 30 years of impressive growth. But no country is immune to economic troubles, and sooner or later, China's engine will start to sputter.

One investor on the front lines of a potential Chinese slowdown is David Fedirchuk, a Canadian filmmaker living in Sydney, Australia. Although he considers himself only a "small-time" stock trader, as he starts amassing retirement savings for his growing family, the married dad of two is very worried about what's coming down the pike.

"A Chinese bust would be devastating," says Fedirchuk, 40, who runs a production company called Mum's Spaghetti. "Right now the mining sector is keeping Australia afloat, and if China no longer gobbles up resources, we have only ailing retail and manufacturing sectors to rely on."

That's why, like any good chess player, Fedirchuk is already thinking a couple of moves ahead. A Chinese slowdown would likely lead to a Sydney property bust -- which is why he's already put his home on the market.

But back here in the States, what's an investor to do? After all, the U.S. is China's largest trading partner, with $385 billion in two-way trade in 2010, an almost 30 percent jump in a single year. We're also its largest export destination, and its fourth-largest source of imports. Sorry to say that if the Chinese economy goes down hard, there won't be many places for equity investors to hide.

That said, here are a few ways worried investors could adopt a defensive crouch:

HEDGE YOUR BETS

"I would be looking to the options market on ticker FXI (Ishares Xinhua China 25 (FXI.P)) to hedge an existing exposure directly, or to initiate a short exposure," says Stephen Solaka, managing partner of L.A. money managers Belmont Capital Group. "So if you were long FXI, I would 'collar' the position." Collaring is a put option that protects your shares from large downward moves, thereby locking in profits.

KNOW YOUR MULTINATIONAL

Some companies are more exposed to the Chinese market than others. Miners like Freeport-McMoRan (FCX.N), heavy machinery producers like Caterpillar (CAT.N), major importers like Wal-Mart (WMT.N), automakers like General Motors (GM.N) and restaurant companies like Yum! Brands (YUM.N) have all benefited from the Chinese boom -- and would be vulnerable to a slowdown.

AVOID SPECULATING

Most mom-and-pop investors shouldn't be trying to pick individual stocks half a world away, especially when strong winds are gathering. Be especially careful, says Bank of America's Cui, "when investing in banks, property and investment-led sectors including resources, steel, cement, machinery, contractors and dry bulk shipping." If you don't want to give up your exposure to the massive Chinese market - after all, 9 percent annual growth still sounds pretty stellar to American ears -- a broad-based mutual fund like Matthews China (MCHFX.O) (MCHFX) should at least cushion your investment from plunges in individual stocks and sectors.

Attorney General Holder to face lawmakers on gun sting (Reuters)

WASHINGTON (Reuters) ? Attorney General Eric Holder will testify in December to a congressional panel about a botched operation to track guns smuggled from the United States to Mexican drug cartels, officials said on Friday.

Holder has agreed go before the House of Representatives Judiciary Committee on December 8 which could lead to a fierce volley of accusations by congressional Republicans who have harshly questioned what the attorney general knew and when.

The debacle stemmed from an attempt to crack down on guns being smuggled to the violent drug cartels in Mexico, but agents failed to track the guns after their initial purchase.

Some have since been found at crime scenes on both sides of the border and complicated ties between the two countries.

Two weapons from the operation, dubbed "Fast and Furious", were discovered at the scene of a shootout in which a U.S. Border Patrol agent was killed.

It is not known whether those guns fired the fatal bullets, but that incident led to some agents from the Justice Department's Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives to blow the whistle on the operation.

The attorney general has said he was unaware of the operation or its tactical details until after the scandal erupted earlier this year. The bungled operation has become a headache for the Obama administration.

Holder's planned congressional testimony was confirmed by spokeswomen for Holder and the committee.

The chairman of the House Oversight Committee, Republican Representative Darrell Issa, has repeatedly called on Holder to testify, seeking to sort out when he became aware of the operation and details on who approved it.

Issa, also a Judiciary Committee member, has been leading an inquiry by his own committee into the affair. He has accused Holder and other Justice Department officials of knowing earlier about the operation and its tactics, pointing to memos addressed to them that broadly referred to it.

No evidence has emerged that they knew specifically of the operation or its tactics before this year. The Justice Department's inspector general is also looking into it.

The scandal led to the resignation in August of the chief federal prosecutor in Arizona, Dennis Burke, whose office was running the operation in conjunction with the ATF.

The acting director of the ATF at the time, Kenneth Melson, also was removed from his job.

Acer's first venture into Windows Phone arrives in France as the Allegro

Remember the Acer W4? After seeing it at IFA 2011, it seems that it's finally ready to make some first impressions, and its blind date is with France. Known officially as the Allegro, Acer's inaugural Windows Phone isn't going over the top in the spec department: it has a 3.6-inch WVGA (800 x 480) display, 1GHz single-core Qualcomm MSM8255 CPU, 8GB internal storage, 5MP rear camera with LED flash and a 1,300mAh battery. However, a unique addition to this €299 ($425) device is a feature called Fast Charge, which allows the Allegro to get juiced up to 2.5 times faster than the rest of the company's lineup. Expect the device to land in France in mid-November with two color options -- white and dark blue iceberg. Just make sure, Acer, to walk your date all the way back home from dinner.

Cain: Polls show I'm connecting with voters (AP)

WASHINGTON ? Republican presidential hopeful Herman Cain says his "connection to the people" is why he's pulled ahead in some polls.

A new Iowa poll shows Cain leading with 23 percent support, while early front-runner Mitt Romney is at 22 percent.

Cain was asked on CBS' "Face the Nation" whether Romney, who's making his second run for the GOP presidential nomination, was disappointing the party.

Cain said he didn't think that was the case. Cain said he thinks Republicans "are genuinely enthused about what I'm saying and how I'm saying it."

UCF board gives president negotiation authority

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) ? Central Florida is a step closer to making a move to a new athletics conference after the school's board of trustee voted unanimously Friday to give school President John Hitt the authority to negotiate a contract for its athletics programs to join a new league.

The vote came during a brief meeting Friday following an update about discussions Hitt's has had with officials from a conference he declined to identify. The league could be the Big East, which met with UCF officials recently.

UCF has not yet received an invitation to join another conference. Hitt said he couldn't predict when an invitation might come or what the circumstances of a potential agreement might look like, but said discussions are "progressing rapidly" and that he wanted negotiation power about exit and entrance fees when they do.

"It could be within a matter of days," Hitt said.

Should UCF leave Conference USA for another league, it would have to pay an exit fee of $500,000, in addition to being required to pay its remaining share of television revenue ? about $6.25 million. Hitt said Friday that those financial obligations are not an impediment to UCF changing conferences.

The Big East is looking to add members after recently losing Syracuse, Pittsburgh and TCU. It is considering adding UCF, along with fellow C-USA members SMU and Houston for all sports, and Boise State, Navy and Air Force for football only.

In a similar move to UCF Friday, Houston board of regents voted unanimously Thursday night to give its chancellor and president authority to negotiate a contract to move the Cougars into a more lucrative league.

The biggest draw for UCF moving to the Big East would be that it offers an automatic bid to the Bowl Championship Series in football, something that C-USA does not.

UCF athletics director Keith Tribble said earlier this month that should UCF be approached about switching affiliations that having an automatic tie-in to the BCS in football would be one of the main priorities. School officials also have said moving to any conference would require an all-sports invitation.

Tribble said that he believes UCF's profile is ripe for a move to a bigger league.

"We always tell people in this changing environment is take a look at UCF," Tribble said. "Take a look at what we've accomplished. Take a look at what we believe we can be as a program and as a university. And then we have the facts and figures to back that up."

The Big East currently has six football members committed to the conference beyond this season, and eight schools that do not compete in the league in football, including Notre Dame.

Big East Commissioner John Marinatto said last week that there is no specific timetable for the league to expand, but there has been a lot of activity recently to suggest some changes could occur soon.

The Big East's presidents also unanimously voted last week t to increase the league's withdrawal fee from $5 million to $10 million when an expansion plan is executed. It's a move it hopes will deter recent defections and help it keep its BCS tag when contracts are renegotiated.

How to Create a Fake Identity and Stay Anonymous Online [Evil Week]

How to Create a Fake Identity and Stay Anonymous OnlineYou don't need to have evil motives for wanting to fake your identity or go incognito online; for many people, it's a matter of privacy and avoiding spammers and scammers. Thankfully, there are a great many tools for staying anonymous online. Here are a few of the best.

The Browser's Incognito Mode

The private browsing mode in Google Chrome, Firefox, and other browsers records no information about your browsing, including form data you enter, files you download, or history of pages you visit. It's handy for many things beyond porn. To launch a window in private browsing mode, use these keyboard shortcuts:

  • Chrome and Opera: Ctrl+Shift+N
  • Firefox, Internet Explorer: Ctrl+Shift+P

For Safari, go to Safari > Private Browsing.

What about mobile devices? Use an alternative mobile browser that will clear your browsing history for you automatically, such as our pick for best web browser on iPhone, Atomic Web Browser, or Android browser top pick, Dolphin.

Private Browsing Tricks

If you want to open your browser in private mode all the time, add a simple switch to your browser's shortcut.

We've also previously mentioned a Firefox extension called Private Browsing Window, which starts a new private browsing window in Firefox without closing your old ones.

Proxy Servers and VPNs

Although private browsing mode is great for preventing sites from writing trackable cookies and other info to your computer, it doesn't completely make you anonymous. If you want the most assurance that others won't know who you really are, you'll want to use a proxy server and/or a virtual private network connection so you can appear to be someone and somewhere else.

The free Tor software is one of our favorites for anonymizing our online sessions. It routes web requests through multiple tunnels, preventing sites from knowing who or where you are.

If you want to set up your own secure secure, encrypted system to access on the go, you can do this usingHamachi and Privoxy, tunneling traffic using your own home computer.

Another alternative is previously mentioned Windows app CyberGhost VPN, which is free for up to 6 hours of surfing or 1GB of downloading.

Disposable Email Addresses and Anonymous Email Sending

Disposable email address services hide your real email address and keep the spam out by giving you a temporary email address that forwards to your real one. There are so many different disposable email services to choose from, and we've mentioned quite a few. Spamgourmet is one of the earliest services and still great. You might also like Trashmail, which as we mentioned before, offers Firefox and Chrome extensions for convenience.

When it's time to send an email message or SMS, use a tool like previously mentioned Sharpmail.

Fake Identity Creators

Trying to stay anonymous can be difficult with all the forms websites require you to fill out. You can make up fake information yourself or, better yet, use something like previously mentioned Fake Name Generator to create a realistic fake ID that'll fool web forms.

Looking to disappear and establish a new identity in real life? We've got some excerpts from How to Disappear that can help you formulate a plan to ditch Big Brother and disappear forever. Photo by gaelx.

Police fire mace at Denver protesters, 20 arrested (Reuters)

DENVER (Reuters) ? Police in riot gear fired pepper balls and mace into a crowd of economic protesters in Denver on Saturday and arrested 20 after some people entered the grounds of the State Capitol, police said.

Denver Police Spokesman Lt. Matt Murray said about 2,000 demonstrators from "Occupy Wall Street" protests against economic inequality marched peacefully through downtown Denver, as they have done for the past several Saturdays.

But the situation heated up when protesters moved toward the Capitol. The Colorado State Patrol, which provides security for the statehouse, requested aid from Denver police when marchers entered the Capitol grounds, Murray said.

Someone then kicked over a police motorcycle, slightly injuring an officer, and kicked several other officers, he said. Police in riot gear moved in on the crowd, firing pepper balls and mace into the crowd, Murray said.

Murray said the seven arrests were for assault, assault on a police officer, disturbing the peace and disobeying lawful orders.

Thirteen more people were arrested when protesters attempted to erect a tent in a park across from the Capitol. Police took the tent down and protesters who interfered with police were arrested.

One protester was treated by paramedics at the scene after police physically restrained him.

"He was kicking at officers and was very intoxicated," Murray said.

Murray said once police removed the tent, most of the crowd dispersed and the situation calmed down.

Manual wheelchair use, exercise and calorie burning examined

ScienceDaily (Oct. 28, 2011) ? A person who uses a manual wheelchair can burn up to 120 calories in half an hour while wheeling at 2 mph on a flat surface, which is three times as much as someone doing the same action in a motorized wheelchair.

The same person can expend 127 calories while mopping and as much as 258 calories while fencing in a thirty-minute timeframe if the activities are done in a manual wheelchair.

This is according to a review article written by Professor David R. Bassett Jr. of the Department of Kinesiology, Recreation, and Sport Studies at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. It calculates the calorie costs of various physical activities for people who use manual wheelchairs and summarizes them into a single source -- a first of its kind.

The article, which Bassett co-authored with former UT graduate student Scott A. Conger, was published this month in Adapted Physical Activity Quarterly, a journal issued by Human Kinetics Inc.

The review should be helpful to those who want to create physical activity questionnaires and develop recommendations for people with disabilities.

It also would show people with disabilities that they can obtain health-enhancing benefits when they exercise moderately or vigorously, Bassett said.

"It might be simply wheeling their chair along while taking their dog for a walk or playing wheelchair basketball," he said. "You can still burn a significant number of calories."

Bassett co-authored another document entitled the "2011 Compendium of Physical Activities" for able-bodied people. The study, which was funded by National Institutes of Health, contains a list of activities that is continually updated and is widely used. But he saw a need to develop a comparable resource for those who use wheelchairs.

Bassett and Conger reviewed more than 250 studies containing energy expenditure data for wheelchair-related physical activities. They identified sixty-three activities, ranging from being sedentary to household chores and transportation to exercise.

The US Department of Health and Human Sciences recommends that adults with disabilities should get at least 150 minutes per week of moderate exercise or seventy-five minutes of vigorous exercise per week. The suggestion is the same for able-bodied people.

A partial list of wheelchair-related activities and their caloric burn (performed by a 160-pound adult in thirty minutes):

  • Sitting, watching TV: 40
  • Dusting: 65
  • Table Tennis: 80
  • Vacuuming: 98
  • Basketball (shooting baskets): 116
  • Tennis: 149
  • Basketball (gameplay): 221
  • Nordic sit skiing: 428

Study: Japan nuke radiation higher than estimated (AP)

NEW YORK ? The Fukushima nuclear disaster released twice as much of a radioactive substance into the atmosphere as Japanese authorities estimated, reaching 40 percent of the total from Chernobyl, a preliminary report says.

The estimate of much higher levels of radioactive cesium-137 comes from a worldwide network of sensors. Study author Andreas Stohl of the Norwegian Institute for Air Research says the Japanese government estimate came only from data in Japan, and that would have missed emissions blown out to sea.

The study did not consider health implications of the radiation. Cesium-137 is dangerous because it can last for decades in the environment, releasing cancer-causing radiation.

The long-term effects of the nuclear accident are unclear because of the difficulty of measuring radiation amounts people received.

In a telephone interview, Stohl said emission estimates are so imprecise that finding twice the amount of cesium isn't considered a major difference. He said some previous estimates had been higher than his.

The journal Atmospheric Chemistry and Physics posted the report online for comment, but the study has not yet completed a formal review by experts in the field or been accepted for publication.

Last summer, the Japanese government estimated that the March 11 Fukushima accident released 15,000 terabecquerels of cesium. Terabecquerels are a radiation measurement. The new report from Stohl and co-authors estimates about 36,000 terabecquerels through April 20. That's about 42 percent of the estimated release from Chernobyl, the report says.

An official at the Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency, the Japanese government branch overseeing such findings, said the agency could not offer any comment on the study because it had not reviewed its contents.

It also says about a fifth of the cesium fell on land in Japan, while most of the rest fell into the Pacific Ocean. Only about 2 percent of the fallout came down on land outside Japan, the report concluded.

Experts have no firm projections about how many cancers could result because they're still trying to find out what doses people received. Some radiation from the accident has also been detected in Tokyo and in the United States, but experts say they expect no significant health consequences there.

Still, concern about radiation is strong in Japan. Many parents of small children in Tokyo worry about the discovery of radiation hotspots even though government officials say they don't pose a health risk. And former prime minister Naoto Kan has said the most contaminated areas inside the evacuation zone could be uninhabitable for decades.

Stohl also noted that his study found cesium-137 emissions dropped suddenly at the time workers started spraying water on the spent fuel pool from one of the reactors. That challenges previous thinking that the pool wasn't emitting cesium, he said.

Still, uncertainty over the capital's fate and the start of a government-declared five-day holiday fueled an exodus of people fearing the worst who clogged highways and air terminals to get out of town. (AP) ? The main river coursing through Thailand's capital swelled to record highs Friday, briefly flooding riverside buildings and an ornate royal complex at high tide amid fears that flood defenses could break and swamp the heart of the city.

Ankle-high water from the Chao Phraya river spilled through one sandbagged entranceway of Bangkok's treasured Grand Palace, which once housed the kingdom's monarchy. The army was pumping out the water, and tourists were still entering the white-walled compound.

The river has filled roads outside the palace gates for days, but the water has receded with the tides, leaving streets dry again.

But the higher than normal tides in the Gulf of Thailand, expected to peak Saturday, are obstructing the flood runoff from the north, and there are fears that the overflows could swamp parts of downtown. The goverment also is worried major barriers and dikes could break.

Friday's morning high tide passed without a major breach, but the waters briefly touched riverside areas closer to the city's central businesses districts of Silom and Sathorn.

"It is clear that although the high tides haven't reached 2.5 meters, it was high enough to prolong the suffering of those living outside of the flood walls and to threaten those living behind deteriorating walls," Bangkok Governor Sukhumbhand Paribatra said.

The flood walls protecting much of the inner city are 2.5 meters (8.2 feet), and Saturday's high tide is expected to reach 2.6 meters (8.5 feet).

Seven of Bangkok's 50 districts ? all in the northern outskirts ? are heavily flooded, and residents have fled aboard bamboo rafts and army trucks and by wading in waist-deep water. Another eight districts have seen less serious flooding.

Fresh flooding was reported Friday in the city's southeast when a canal overflowed in a neighborhood on the outer parts of Sukhumvit Road.

The floods, the heaviest in Thailand in more than half a century, have drenched a third of the country's provinces, killed close to 400 people and displaced more than 110,000 others. The water has crept from the central plains south toward the Gulf of Thailand, but Bangkok is in the way. It is literally surrounded by behemoth pools of water flowing around and through the city via a complex network of canals and rivers.

Economic analysts say the floods have cut Thailand's 2011 GDP projections by as much as 2 percentage points. Damage estimates of $6 billion could double if floods swamp Bangkok.

Most of Bangkok, however, has remained dry and most of its more than 9 million residents were staying put to protect their homes. Still, fears the inner city could flood has fueled an exodus, as Thais and expatriates alike sought refuge outside Bangkok and foreign governments urged their citizens to avoid unessential travel to the threatened city.

The U.S. State Department cautioned against all but essential travel to areas of Thailand affected by the flooding, including Bangkok, because of transportation difficulties and shortages of certain food items.

On Thursday, an emotional Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra acknowledged her government could not control the deluge.

"What we're doing today is resisting the force of nature," Yingluck told reporters. She said the water bearing down on Bangkok was so massive that "we cannot resist all of it."

Flooding has closed Bangkok's Don Muang airport, mainly used for domestic flights, but Thailand's main international airport is operating as usual.

The government's Flood Relief Operations Center says its contingency plan involves the Thai military and government agencies transporting people from evacuation points in the capital to outlying provinces.

Ban Terry?

LONDON (AP) -Former England striker Les Ferdinand, whose cousin is at the center of the racism investigation against John Terry, does not want the England captain to be allowed to play for his country again if he is found guilty.

The Football Association is investigating whether the Chelsea captain directed a racial slur at Queens Park Rangers defender Anton Ferdinand during a Premier League match on Sunday.

The probe was triggered Tuesday by QPR's official complaint after footage of Terry apparently mouthing the insult at the black player spread on social networking sites.

Terry has denied allegations of racism, saying his comments were taken out of context.

But if Terry was found guilty, his future playing for England - not only as captain - would be thrown into doubt, just seven months after regaining the armband following a sex scandal.

Anton Ferdinand's close relative said the English football authorities need to be seen to be acting tough on racism.

Asked if Terry should be banned from the national team if the allegations were proven, Les Ferdinand said Wednesday: "It's down to the FA, but I'd be shouting from the rooftops (for that)."

"They need to make a statement," he added. "If they don't make a statement, paltry fines that have been handed out in the past prove to people that these people do not believe there is a problem with racism in football."

Ferdinand spoke to The Associated Press at the Black List Awards in London, which recognize the achievements of black people in English football. He said he has to speak to his cousin about the incident.

"The more we see (racism) is a problem and we can do something about it, the more it eradicates the problem from happening," Ferdinand said. "Until we can do that, this problem will continue (to) happen and I think it will steadily get worse until major steps are taken about stamping this out."

The Terry incident is also being investigated by police in London.

The 30-year-old defender said the alleged comments directed at Ferdinand were taken out of context by social media users who spread the video on Sunday night.

"I thought Anton was accusing me of using a racist slur against him," he said after the match. "I responded aggressively, saying that I never used that term."

The incident happened during English football's anti-racism week, which highlights the progress made since abuse marred the game in the 1970s and 80s.

And it came just a week after the FA launched a probe into allegations that Liverpool striker Luis Suarez racially abused Manchester United's black defender Patrice Evra during a Premier League match.

"I think the FA, FIFA and UEFA have been in positions where they have been able to stamp out a few problems which have reared their ugly heads in the last few years and they haven't done so, or they haven't done it diligently enough," Ferdinand said. "And I think that's what has brought us to where we are today talking about this situation (with Anton)."

3rd Iron Man film to shoot in North Carolina (AP)

WILMINGTON, N.C. ? The next installment in the Iron Man superhero film franchise will shoot in North Carolina.

Marvel Studios will film "Iron Man 3" starring Robert Downey Jr. in Wilmington, with pre-production starting soon and work in the state lasting about 10 months.

State film office head Aaron Syrett said Thursday it will be the largest production to shoot in North Carolina. The production is expected to create 550 jobs for tradesmen, technicians and other crew members and more than 1,000 spots for actors and other talent.

The previous films in the series are based on a Marvel Comics character and featured Downey as a billionaire weapons-maker who fights bad guys wearing a high-tech suit of armor he created.

7 dead after semi-truck slams into minivan in Ind. (AP)

BRISTOL, Ind. ? A tractor-trailer slammed into the back of a packed minivan in northern Indiana late Thursday, killing at least seven people and sending four other to hospitals, authorities said.

The minivan was carrying 10 people when it was hit along the Indiana Toll Road near Bristol, just south of the Michigan border, according to Indiana State Police. Witness accounts suggest that the minivan may have hit a deer, then slowed or stopped in the eastbound lanes before it was hit from behind by the tractor-trailer, police said.

Seven of the minivan's occupants died at the scene and the other three were taken to hospitals, including two who were airlifted. The driver of the tractor-trailer also was hospitalized.

None of the victims' names has been released. The conditions of those who survived also haven't been released.

State Police spokesman Sgt. Trent Smith said early Friday that the minivan had an Illinois license plate, and the truck had a Wisconsin tag. Both vehicles ended up in the center median, blocking traffic in both directions.

"That's not to say that the driver of the truck was from Wisconsin or the driver of minivan was from Illinois, but that's where the vehicles were registered," Smith said.

No other vehicles were involved in the accident, which was reported shortly before 8 p.m. Thursday. The crash shut down the toll road, though it was reopened just before midnight.

Other details weren't immediately available, Smith said.

Jackson doctor's defense case drawing to a close (AP)

LOS ANGELES ? The defense of the doctor charged in Michael Jackson's death will shift away Thursday from personality to the science that his attorneys hope will prevent the physician from being convicted.

The final witnesses testifying for Dr. Conrad Murray will be fellow doctors, one an expert in addiction and the other in the powerful anesthetic that the Houston-based cardiologist was giving Jackson as a sleep aid.

Their testimony could make the difference in whether Murray is convicted or acquitted of involuntary manslaughter in connection with Jackson's June 2009 death. Authorities contend Murray gave Jackson a fatal dose of propofol and botched resuscitation efforts.

Murray's attorneys contend Jackson gave himself the fatal dose of propofol when his doctor left the room, but have not yet shown evidence about how that theory is even possible. Several prosecution experts have said the self-administration defense was improbable and a key expert said he ruled it out completely, arguing the more likely scenario is that Murray gave Jackson a much higher dose than he has admitted.

The scientific testimony of Dr. Robert Waldman and Dr. Paul White comes a day after jurors heard from five of Murray's one-time patients, who described the cardiologist as a caring physician who performed procedures for free and spent hours getting to know them. When Ruby Mosley described Murray's work at a clinic he founded in a poor neighborhood in Houston in memory of his father, tears welled up in the eyes of the normally stoic doctor-turned-defendant.

Waldman is an addiction expert who may try to bolster the defense theory that Jackson had become dependent on propofol to sleep and was driven to self-administer it when Murray left his bedside.

It will be up to White to explain whether that was possible. He sat in court throughout the testimony of prosecution propofol expert Dr. Steven Shafer, at times shaking his head and furiously passing notes to defense attorneys. In the courthouse, he has been seen conferring with Murray in the hallway outside the courtroom where the case is being heard.

White and Waldman do not necessarily have to convince jurors that Jackson gave himself the fatal dose, but merely provide them with enough reasonable doubt about the prosecution case against Murray.

While prosecutors have portrayed Murray, 58, as a reckless physician who repeatedly broke the rules by giving Jackson propofol as a sleep aid, jurors heard a different portrait of the doctor on Wednesday.

Several of the character witnesses called described Murray as the best doctor they had ever seen and highlighted his skills at repairing their hearts with stents and other procedures.

"I'm alive today because of that man," said Andrew Guest of Las Vegas, who looked Murray. "That man sitting there is the best doctor I've ever seen."

Another former patient, Gerry Causey, stopped to shake Murray's hand in the courtroom and said the physician was his best friend.

A prosecutor noted that none of them were being treated for sleep issues, although Causey and others said they didn't believe the allegations against Murray.

Defense attorneys have told Superior Court Judge Michael Pastor they expect their case to conclude on Thursday. Pastor has said if that happens, closing arguments would occur next week.

Wall Street protests reflect nationwide anger

Is the movement merely an extension of a nationwide scare about the possibility of a double dip recession?

Are the protests a real-life extreme negative sentiment signal that markets should be paying attention to? Does the velocity of anger represent a crescendo of misery for the "it's a recession" crowd?

Skip to next paragraph Joshua M. Brown

Joshua has been managing money for high net worth clients, charitable foundations, corporations and retirement plans for more than a decade.

    Recent posts

I've been thinking about this over the weekend after reading a few things about how the Occupy Movement is losing steam.

See the story below for some sense about the infighting going on between the various factions as it turns out that "some protesters are more equal than others" a la Animal Farm. Here's one of the drummers complaining about how the so-called General Assembly is acting like the very bureaucracy they are meant to be rebelling against:

?They are becoming the government we?re trying to protest," he said. "They didn?t even give the drummers a say ... Drumming is the heartbeat of this movement. Look around: This is dead, you need a pulse to keep something alive.?

The drummers claim that the finance working group even levied a percussion tax of sorts, taking up to half of the $150-300 a day that the drum circle was receiving in tips. ?Now they have over $500,000 from all sorts of places,? said Engelerdt. ?We?re like, what?s going on here? They?re like the banks we?re protesting."

    from:

Animal Farm at OWS (New York Magazine)

The movement's beginnings coincided with the pessimism peak on The Street as big firms were cutting GDP forecasts just about the time when the kids were first rolling out their sleeping bags. The question is whether we've seen the absolute worst of the pessimism on both The Street and the streets in early October. Was the movement merely an outcropping or an extension of a nationwide scare about the possibility of double dip?

The kids downtown won't see it that way but that's because most aren't paying attention to the economic headlines. But some forces are bigger than the comprehension of the soldiers fighting in the trenches, some battlefield shifts elude the notice of those fighting hand-to-hand, tooth and nail.

I'm raising questions here and not answering them, maybe these two themes are merely running on parallel yet unrelated tracks. Or maybe not. If there is a psychological shift taking hold and a true amelioration of economic conditions coming for the US, one can only hope that it brings some prosperity to those who may be the last to see it coming in Zuccotti Park.
