Obama, Clinton meet for lunch, sparking 2016 buzz

(AP) ? When is a lunch more than just a midday meal? When the two diners are President Barack Obama and Hillary Rodham Clinton, and inquiring minds want to know who, if anyone, the president will endorse in 2016.

A summertime meal shared by Obama and his rival-turned-ally threw the political speculation machine into overdrive Monday, highlighting how closely both are being watched for signs of their intentions in the next presidential race.

For Clinton, it's a question of whether the former first lady will take the plunge, launching another campaign eight years after she lost to Obama in a hard-fought primary. For Obama, it's about dueling loyalties to two of his closest advisers who would both covet his endorsement: Clinton and Vice President Joe Biden, who is also said to be eyeing the Oval Office.

Such questions set the table for a midday powwow over salad, grilled chicken and pasta jambalaya whipped up by the White House chef and served al fresco on the patio just outside the Oval Office.

Will Clinton tip her hand? Will Obama offer his support? Or will the two dive deep into current events ? bloodshed in Egypt, for instance, or a budding new round of Mideast peace talks that eluded Clinton as secretary of state?

In all likelihood, none of the above.

"The purpose of the lunch was chiefly social," said White House spokesman Josh Earnest, calling it a "chance to catch up" and adding that Obama had initiated the invitation. "Secretary Clinton and the president have developed not just a strong working relationship, but also a genuine friendship."

So what are the chances that Biden popped in for coffee and dessert, a casual reminder that he's still the one with the office closest to Obama's?

"I think the table was set for two," Earnest said.

Not to worry ? Biden will have his own chance to shoot the breeze with his former Senate colleague and 2008 primary opponent on Tuesday. The White House said Biden and Clinton will have breakfast together at the Naval Observatory, the vice president's official residence.

While in the West Wing Monday, Clinton stopped by the office of Susan Rice, Obama's national security adviser who served as U.N. ambassador under Clinton, and visited with John Kerry, Clinton's replacement as secretary of state. Kerry was preparing for an evening dinner marking the relaunch of long-stalled Israeli-Palestinian peace negotiations.

The lunch isn't the first time Obama and Clinton huddled since Clinton stepped down in February after four years as Obama's top diplomat. They saw each other briefly in Dallas at the opening of former President George W. Bush's presidential library in April. And in March, the Clintons shared a private dinner with Obama that wasn't announced publicly until after the fact.

In the meantime, Clinton has kept up a hectic schedule of speeches and public appearances that has provided further fodder to those urging her to run again. A super PAC seeking to create a campaign-in-waiting in case she runs, Ready for Hillary, recently picked up support from some of Obama's most prominent former campaign organizers.

So it's no wonder that each Obama-Clinton rendezvous is closely analyzed, elating some and prompting eye rolls from others who lament that barely six months in to Obama's second term, talk about his replacement is already reaching a fever pitch.

"In Democratic circles, it makes people fantasize and engage in all kinds of speculation, when in fact it may just be a tete-a-tete between the leader of the free world and the most important person in the Democratic Party," said Hank Sheinkopf, a New York-based Democratic strategist who worked on President Bill Clinton's 1996 re-election.

Verdict likely Tuesday in WikiLeaks court-martial

FORT MEADE, Md. (AP) -- Pfc. Bradley Manning could learn as early as Tuesday afternoon whether he will be convicted of aiding the enemy ? punishable by life in prison without parole ? for sending more than 700,000 government documents to the anti-secrecy website WikiLeaks, a military judge said Monday.

Col. Denise Lind said shortly before calling a noon lunch recess that she expects to announce her verdict at 1 p.m Tuesday in Manning's court-martial. Lind planned to return to the bench later Monday, the third day of her deliberations. It wasn't clear whether Lind has arrived at her findings or was merely giving guidance to court-martial participants, spectators and reporters.

The charge of aiding the enemy is the most serious of 21 counts Manning is contesting. He also is charged with eight federal Espionage Act violations, five federal theft counts, and two federal Computer Fraud and Abuse Act violations, each punishable by up to 10 years; and five military counts of violating a lawful general regulation, punishable by up to two years each.

Lind has tentatively scheduled a sentencing hearing beginning Wednesday.

Manning is being tried by a judge alone, which was his choice. The trial began June 3.

The 25-year-old native of Crescent, Okla., has admitted to sending more than 470,000 Iraq and Afghanistan battlefield reports, 250,000 State Department diplomatic cables, and other material including several battlefield video clips to WikiLeaks while working as an intelligence analyst in Iraq in early 2010.

The video included footage of a 2007 U.S. Apache helicopter attack in Baghdad that killed at least nine men, including a Reuters news photographer and his driver.

Manning claims he sent the material to expose war crimes and deceitful diplomacy. In closing arguments last week, defense attorney David Coombs portrayed Manning as a naive whistleblower who never intended the material to be seen by the enemy. Manning claims he selected material that wouldn't harm troops or national security.

Prosecutors called him an anarchist hacker and traitor who indiscriminately leaked classified information he had sworn to protect, knowing it would be seen by al-Qaida. They showed that al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden obtained copies of some of the documents WikiLeaks published before bin Laden was killed by U.S. Navy Seals in 2011.

Manning pleaded guilty in February to 10 counts, including less-serious military versions of all the federal charges. His admitted offenses carry prison terms punishable by up to 20 years in prison. Prosecutors accepted just one of his pleas and chose to continue prosecuting Manning for the greater offenses.

Egypt's ruling military kills scores of Islamists at rally

By

July 27, 2013

CAIRO - The Egyptian authorities unleashed a ferocious attack on Islamist protesters early Saturday, killing at least 72 people in the second mass killing of demonstrators in three weeks and the deadliest attack by the security services since Egypt's uprising in early 2011.

The attack provided further evidence that Egypt's security establishment was reasserting its dominance after President Mohammed Morsi's ouster three weeks ago, and widening its crackdown on his Islamist allies in the Muslim Brotherhood. The tactics - many were killed with gunshot wounds to the head or the chest - suggested that Egypt's security services felt no need to show any restraint.

?They had orders to shoot to kill,? said Gehad el-Haddad, a Brotherhood spokesman. The message, he said, was, ?This is the new regime.?

In Washington, Secretary of State John Kerry called this ?a pivotal moment for Egypt? and urged its leaders ?to help their country take a step back from the brink.?

The killings occurred a day after hundreds of thousands of Egyptians marched in support of the military, responding to a call by its commander for a ?mandate? to fight terrorism. The appeal by Gen. Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi, who has emerged as Egypt's de facto leader since the military removed Morsi from power, was widely seen as a green light to the security forces to increase their repression of the Islamists.

In the attack Saturday, civilians joined riot police officers in firing live ammunition at the protesters as they marched toward a bridge over the Nile. By early morning, the number of wounded people had overwhelmed doctors at a nearby field hospital.

One doctor sat by himself, crying as he whispered verses from the Quran. Nearby, medics tried to revive a man on a gurney. When they failed he was quickly lifted away to make room for the many others.

With hundreds of people gravely wounded, the toll seemed certain to rise, and by Saturday evening had already surpassed the more than 60 deaths on July 8, when soldiers and police officers fired on pro-Morsi demonstrators.

As the deaths have mounted, more than 200 since the government was overthrown, hopes have faded for a political solution to the standoff between the military and the Brotherhood, whose leaders, including Morsi, are imprisoned or preparing themselves for jail.

In a televised news conference hours after the clash, Interior Minister Mohamed Ibrahim absolved his men of any responsibility and made no mention of the high death toll. His officers, he said, ?have never and will never shoot a bullet on any Egyptian.?

He blamed Morsi's supporters for the violence, saying they planned to disrupt traffic on the bridge. ?We had to stop them,? Ibrahim said. The protesters threw rocks and fired weapons, he said, and a large number of officers were wounded, including two who were shot in the head.

Ibrahim also suggested that further repression was imminent as the authorities prepared to break up sit-ins that thousands of Morsi's supporters have held for weeks.

?God willing, it will be dispersed in a way that doesn't cause many losses,? he said. ?But God willing, it must end.?

Mohamed ElBaradei, the Nobel Peace Prize laureate who is vice president in the interim government, added a rare note of support for the Brotherhood from the country's new leaders, writing on Twitter that he condemned the ?excessive use of force? and was trying to ?end the standoff in a peaceful manner.?

Kerry called on Egypt's leaders ?to respect the right of peaceful assembly and freedom of expression? and to open an inclusive political dialogue.

?Over two years ago, a revolution began. Its final verdict is not yet decided, but it will be forever impacted by what happens right now,? he said in a statement.

Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel spoke by telephone with el-Sissi, urging him to exercise restraint and ?take steps to prevent further bloodshed and loss of life,? according to a Pentagon statement.

The violence broke out Friday night after a day of large, competing marches by supporters of Morsi and his opponents expressing solidarity with the military. At least eight people died Friday, but there was not the kind of widespread violence that many had feared after el-Sissi's speech Wednesday calling for demonstrations in support of the military.

That changed around 10:30 p.m., when groups of Morsi's supporters left their vast encampment in Nasr City, marching toward the central October 6 Bridge, where police officers were stationed, according to witnesses. Several people said that the protesters had left the camp because it had become overcrowded, and that people had fanned out from the encampment along several boulevards. Others said they had planned to march through a nearby neighborhood.

The group that came under attack walked down Nasr Street, past the reviewing stand where President Anwar Sadat was assassinated in 1981, and the pyramid-shaped memorial to the unknown soldier across the street, toward the bridge.

?We didn't have any weapons,? said Mohamed Abdulhadi, who said he had joined the march, which was ?not violent.? More than 10 other witnesses confirmed his assertion.

The Interior Ministry released a video after the killings that it said showed Morsi supporters firing birdshot at the police and damaging property. It showed protesters throwing rocks, unidentified people wandering into traffic, and one man pulling out what appeared to be a silver pistol and firing it, although it is not clear who the man was or which side of the fighting he was on.

Mohamed Saeed, an agricultural engineer, said he and some of the other protesters had started to exchange words with the officers before even reaching the bridge.

?You know how it is,? he said. ?Some of us said some provocative things, and the tear gas started.? The protesters threw rocks, and the confrontation quickly escalated, Saeed and others said. The Morsi supporters feared that the police were preparing to storm their encampment, so they started building brick walls on the road to ?to prevent them from coming into the sit-in,? Saeed said.

An hour and a half after the clashes started, the police and their allies started firing live ammunition and pellet guns, Saeed said. Other witnesses said they had seen snipers on the roofs of nearby buildings.

5 Things Bevacco And New Executive Chef Gabriele Corcos Can ...

Long time BHB readers may recall that we predicted here in 2007 that the North Heights was poised to become a culinary hot spot. So, with the the debut of Gabriele Corcos at Bevacco Friday night and with the opening of Sociale two blocks down Henry Street planned for Monday (7/29) it?s hard not to be amped up about that ?vision? becoming reality.

Despite our unbridled enthusiasm about his arrival, our experience at Bevacco Friday night for Corcos? debut as Executive Chef was less than spectacular. The food and new menu (which didn?t feel that new or different) is unremarkable comparatively speaking to, say, fellow TV chef Elizabeth Falkner?s run at Atlantic Avenue?s Krescendo. We?ll give Corcos a mulligan on that one considering he?s relatively new to the restaurant business.

Also of note is the revised drinks menu which shows much promise. That said, even a casual fan of Extra Virgin, the Cooking Channel show Corcos hosts with actress wife Debi Mazar, can feel that his creativity was a bit restrained on Night 1.

Yes, it was Corcos? first night and a new beginning for the eatery housed at the perpetually cursed ?Corner of Cranberry? but the long standing issue of slow, aloof and unorganized service that has plagued Bevacco since its opening continues to be its Achilles heel. While we found our meal to be competent ? like dinner at foodie friend?s house ? whatever satisfaction the food and drink provided was undermined by the usual crazy quilt of service at the eatery. And it wasn?t just us, the table next to us received a bottle of hot white wine. When they mentioned this to their server the reply was essentially, ?we don?t usually serve cold bottles of wine.?

The high profile Corcos did pop out of the kitchen to greet diners but from our perspective he appeared to ignore those he didn?t seem to know or to think were important. Most restaurants soft open for ?Friends and Family? before opening to the general public but if you?re allowing regular punters (like us!) to dine on Opening Night then everyone should be treated like ?Friends and Family.?

For example when our final drink order hadn?t arrived for over 20 minutes and our check was dropped and charging for those still undelivered drinks, Corcos bounded towards us with two limoncellos (the order we?d place and were still waiting for) in hand. That?s enough for us and most folks ? famous chef or not ? to salve even the worst episode of bad service. That is, unless the chef actually drops those drinks at another table he?d been hobnobbing with all night. That made us wonder if our food had been contaminated with some sort of Tuscan invisibility potion. (File under: Yes, Pete Wells has a point.) To be fair, the warm white wine table did get a selfie with Mazar ? but it?s unclear whether they?re friends IRL.

All this aside, a celebrity chef holding court every night on Henry Street should and can be a great thing for Brooklyn Heights. And while our first experience under this new regime totally bummed us out, we?re holding out hope that Bevacco will rise above these issues.

It?s times like these we wonder ? What Would Gordon Ramsay Say?

1) Fix The Problems, Find A Leader.

As Ramsay told the owners of ?Grasshopper Also?, ?This restaurant will not succeed unless you make the necessary staff changes.? In his monologue, Ramsay adds the the eatery had everything it needed to succeed except a ?leader.?

2) Get Out Of Denial. Ramsay tells Allan Love, the recalcitrant owner of Ruby Tates Loves Fish that the ?quicker you get out of denial, the quicker we can work together.? Remember folks, it takes team work to make the dream work.

3) Communication Is Key. Transparency, respect and honesty may not always be a joy ride but it?ll make for a more productive restaurant. At Seascape, the owner and chef didn?t speak to each other.

4) Overpriced And Underwhelming Is No Way To Run A Restaurant. At Rococo, Ramsay railed against its pretentious food and ?f*&^ing ridiculous prices?. After we dropped a double C-note for our experience at Bevacco this is particularly relevant.

5) Super-Serve The Locals. ?When running a restaurant in Spain, don?t piss off the locals,? Ramsay says in the episode featuring La Parra. After a disastrous catering event for a local charity, the restaurant had a hard time convincing area residents to dine there. They never recovered from that mistake. The Brooklyn Heights restaurants that do well in the area know this and all have strong list of regulars ? Noodle Pudding, Henry?s End, Jack the Horse, Armando?s, River Deli, Colonie and a few others are great examples. Put simply, showbiz friends, unless they live in the area, will not carry the business beyond relaunch.

Shea's quick goal gives US 1-0 victory over Panama

CHICAGO (AP) ? U.S. coach Jurgen Klinsmann likes to describe Brek Shea's style of play as "unpredictable."

Nobody could have predicted this.

Just 42 seconds after coming into the game as a substitute Sunday, Shea scored and his goal in the 69th minute gave the United States a 1-0 victory over Panama and the CONCACAF Gold Cup title. It is the fifth Gold Cup title for the Americans, but their first since 2007. It also is the first international title as a coach for Jurgen Klinsmann, who won the 1990 World Cup and 1996 European Championship with Germany.

"I was there just to put it away," Shea said.

This was the 11th straight victory for the Americans, four more than their previous record, and they likely will leapfrog Mexico as the best team from the North and Central America and Caribbean region when the next FIFA rankings come out Aug. 8.

When the final whistle sounded, the Americans on the field began celebrating while the rest of the team raced off the bench. Several players jumped up and down, and hugs and high-fives were exchanged. Klinsmann, who watched the game from a luxury box after being suspended for his tirade over the officiating in the semifinal, quickly made his way down to the field, pumping his fists in the air as he walked.

"They wanted to send out a signal that they are the best group in CONCACAF, and they are," Klinsmann said. "For today."

But their performance in this tournament is likely to stay with the Americans for a while. At least until the next round of World Cup qualifying in September.

Not only did they outscore opponents 20-4 in the tournament ? no other team had more than 11 goals ? but they showed they are deeper than they've ever been, with one young player after another stepping up. And they got a dazzling performance from Landon Donovan, who was named the tournament MVP after finishing with five goals and seven assists.

The only disappointment for the Americans was the loss of Stuart Holden with another right knee injury. Holden sprained his knee early in the first half, and while he will have further tests, Klinsmann said after the game that "it's not looking good."

"We are very, very sad for him," Klinsmann said. "We are very concerned about Stuey's situation. It looks like a very serious knee injury."

While most expected a Mexico-US final, Panama had other ideas, upsetting El Tri twice on the strength of its stingy defense. Panama was just as dogged against the Americans early, crowding Donovan and Eddie Johnson and not giving the U.S. any space.

But rather than taking wild shots or trying to force things, the Americans stayed patient.

"At times it may have been a little slow or been going back and forth, but we stuck to the game plan," Besler said.

And as the game went on, the Americans began to break Panama down. They finished with three shots on goal and another eight that were off target ? six in the second half alone. Their best chance came in the 56th minute, DaMarcus Beasley chipped a ball into Donovan, who was in front of the goal at the near post. Donovan got his head on the ball, but not at the angle he wanted and it flew wide of the net.

As the crowd groaned, Donovan threw back his head and Beasley swatted the red flag in the corner.

"We were all hopeful, we all wanted to win," Panama coach Julio Dely Valdez said. "But we all go away feeling we gave it our all. I said I wanted to walk away from the Gold Cup feeling good, and I do."

Shea replaced Joe Corona in the 68th minute, just as the Americans were pressing forward again. Alejandro Bedoya got the ball on his left foot and crossed to Donovan, who took a mighty swing ? and missed. But it was enough to throw goalkeeper Jaime Pendeo off, and when the ball rolled past Panama's Roberto Chen and on toward the net, Shea was ready. Parked inches from the goal line, he stuck out his foot and tapped the ball into the net for his second international goal.

"It doesn't matter who scored today," Shea said. "We won."

Contrasts in age and art: 83-year-old follows 12-year-old at library ...

  • Abstract image of a tornado remembrance by Bobbie Brooks Crow.

IF YOU GO

What: Exhibits of work by Caleb Thrun and Bobbie Brooks Crow.

Where: Catoosa County Library, Old Mill Road at Benton Place, Ringgold, Ga.

When: Caleb Thrun?s show runs through Wednesday; Crow?s show runs Aug. 1-31.

Hours: 10 a.m.-8 p.m. Monday-Thursday; 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Friday-Saturday; 1:30-5:30 p.m. Sunday.

Admission: Free.

Phone: 706-965-3600.

When it was all said and done on April 27, 2011, Bobbie Brooks Crow?s home lost 11 trees but protected an artist.

?I didn?t know I had that many,? she says of the trees, now two years out from the tornadoes that roiled through the Chattanooga area that spring day.

One fell on the deck of her Brainerd home, another clipped the side of her garage, two squashed her car, and two or three dropped into her bedroom.

?I went into the center of the house with the cat and the dog,? says the 83-year-old Crow. ?I thought, ?Here it comes.? I saw this whirring. By the time I got to the center of the house, things were dropping and falling. Next thing I know, the back door came open, there was a breeze and it was quiet.?

The tornadoes that day made her fearful for many months but also provided the subject of the latest exhibition of her work, a series of abstract ?images of things in the air? done on 8 1/2-by-11-inch paper with permanent Sharpie markers. The exhibit of ?around 20? pieces at the Catoosa County Library opens Thursday and runs through Aug. 31.

?I wanted to get over this fear, this psychological thing that happened to me,? Crow says. ?I don?t get scared too much now. Sometimes when I will, I think of the Sharpies.?

On the other end of the spectrum at the Catoosa County Library is 12-year-old Caleb Thrun, whose exhibit of mostly landscape images runs through Wednesday. The young acrylic artist, whose missionary parents are home on furlough from a recent post in Papua New Guinea, has been painting for two years.

?My dad bought me a paint set,? Caleb says, ?and I just started painting. It gives me something to do.

?I try to find something that would look good on a canvas,? he says, ?and I just paint it.?

Janice Kennedy, coordinator of the monthly exhibits at the library, says she likes to sign new artists but feels an obligation to see the type of work that would be exhibited before it goes up. What she saw of Caleb?s impressed her. And 12 of his first 15 works sold in the first three weeks of the exhibit, she says.

The contrast is fascinating between Crow and Caleb, ?one at the very beginning and Bobbie [already] so instrumental in the art community,? Kennedy says, as is ?the fact that they?re back to back.?

Crow says she started taking art classes when she was 23 or 24 years old. In 1997, at age 67, she earned a Bachelor?s of Fine Arts degree in painting and sculpture from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga.

Well before her degree and after, she has had one-woman shows, two-women shows and collaborative shows of what she says is largely work of abstract expressionism.

She also founded the St. Catherine?s Artists Guild at Grace Episcopal Church to encourage local artists and to display their work and is an active member of the Civic Arts League, which meets at the church.

She has been an artist-in-residence at schools in Tennessee and Georgia, and her large-scale works have hung at the likes of the Walnut Street Bridge, the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga and the bell tower of Grace Episcopal.

Crow studies weekly with Morris Mitchell, a former professor at Ringling School of Art in Sarasota, Fla., and says ?I still just want to learn.? Her artist bucket list has more collaborations, additional work with children and even a hope to roll in paint for a canvas.

?I guess I?ll have to keep painting,? Crow says, ?until they might have to roll me [out].?

Caleb, on the other hand, received a book on painting, a DVD by the late American painter, art instructor and television host Bob Ross and a few pointers from his dad, Terry. He has no lifetime ambition as an artist but embraces it as a hobby.

Homeschooled and going into the seventh grade, Caleb also is a bit surprised so many of his paintings have sold.

?I?m happy,? he says. ?I guess I?ll just keep it going. It?s kind of fun.?

Manslaughter charge filed in Hudson boat crash

PIERMONT, N.Y. (AP) ? A deadly nighttime speedboat crash on the Hudson River hurled a bride-to-be and her fiance's best man into the water and left the groom and three others injured, including a friend charged with vehicular manslaughter on Saturday, just two weeks before the couple was to exchange their vows.

Six friends were on board the boat Friday night when it struck a barge near the Tappan Zee Bridge, sending Lindsey Stewart and Mark Lennon, both 30, into the water and injuring the other four, including groom-to-be Brian Bond, officials said.

A body matching Stewart's description was recovered Saturday while Lennon is presumed dead, Rockland County Sheriff's Department Chief William Barbera said. The search for Lennon's body will resume Sunday.

"The search has been suspended this evening and the tides have a lot to do with that," Barbera said. "We'll start again first thing in the morning."

Authorities charged the boat's operator, Jojo John, 35, of Nyack, with vehicular manslaughter and vehicular assault. He was arraigned from a hospital bed and ordered held on $250,000 bond, Barbera said. John is suspected of operating the boat while intoxicated but authorities are still awaiting the result of blood tests.

Attempts to reach John's family were not immediately successful and it was not clear if he had an attorney.

Earlier Saturday, authorities pulled a woman's body from the water that matched Stewart's description. Officials were working to confirm that the body was Stewart's but it was unclear how long that could take.

Stewart and Lennon were thrown from the boat when it struck a barge carrying materials for the construction of a replacement for the Tappan Zee Bridge, about a half-hour's drive north of New York City.

The boat, a 21-foot Stingray, had left the village of Piermont for a short trip across the river to Tarrytown, authorities said.

Stewart, of Piermont, worked for an insurance company. She and Bond were set to be married Aug. 10, family members said.

Bond, 35, was knocked unconscious in the crash but later woke and was able to call 911, Stewart's mother, Carol Stewart-Kosik, said.

Stewart's stepfather, Walter Kosik, said the couple have known each other since they were young children and used to go to church together.

"They have been friends the whole time, and they fell in love about 3 ? years ago," Kosik said.

They were to be married at the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Pearl River, with a reception at a vineyard in Hillburn, he said.

Barbera declined to identify the other people aboard the boat and had no information on their conditions. He said the barge was equipped with lights, but it was still difficult to see on the water late at night.

The New York State Thruway Authority, which is overseeing the bridge project, said it was reviewing safety procedures.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families during this difficult time," the authority said in a statement. It added that the lighting on the barges appeared to be functioning normally.

Stewart's former English teacher at Pearl River High School, who remained in contact with her through Facebook, called the accident "heartbreaking."

"She was one of my students and a bright, sweet girl loved by everyone," said Doreen Arney. "I knew that she was getting married, and to Brian. To happen to two such special kids ? it just shouldn't happen."

Syrian troops consolidate gains in Homs city

By ALBERT AJI and ZEINA KARAM
Associated Press

DAMASCUS, Syria (AP) - Syrian government forces backed by Lebanese Hezbollah militants forged ahead with their assault on a key rebel district in the central city of Homs Sunday, activists said, as President Bashar Assad's forces try to crush resistance in the few remaining opposition-held neighborhoods in the city known as the "capital of the revolution."

The push on Homs is part of a broader government offensive on rebel-held areas that has seen regime troops retake some of the territory they have lost to opposition fighters in Syria's more than 2-year-old conflict. Assad's forces turned their sights on Homs, the country's third-largest city, after capturing the strategic town of Qusair near the Lebanon border last month.

Government troops have made headway in Homs in recent days, capturing a 13th century landmark mosque in the contested Khaldiyeh neighborhood that had been in rebel hands for more than a year. Homs holds immense symbolic and strategic importance to both sides, and the ferocity of the fighting for control of it has left much of the city in ruins.

The opposition accused the regime of pulverizing Khaldiyeh and said their victory was "hollow."

On Sunday, Syrian state TV had live coverage from Khaldiyeh, which is located on the northern edge of the Old City, broadcasting footage that showed gaping holes in apartment blocks, shattered buildings with collapsed floors and blackened facades. Soldiers and reporters walked through rubble-strewn streets. The military took TV crews working for pro-regime media outlets deep into the neighborhood, suggesting the army was confident it had secured the area.

An unidentified Syrian army commander standing before a destroyed building in Khaldiyeh told an embedded state TV reporter that the military expected to "liberate" the last part of the district within the next two days.

Syrian government forces captured the ancient Khalid Ibn al-Walid Mosque in Khaldiyeh on Saturday. Syrian TV aired a report with video from inside the mosque, showing heavy damage. The video showed debris littering the floor and a portion of the mosque appeared to have been burned.

Famous for its nine domes and two minarets, the mosque has been a symbol for rebels in the city, and the government takeover dealt a powerful symbolic blow to the rebellion. On Monday, government troops shelled the mosque, damaging the tomb of Ibn al-Walid, a revered figure in Islam. Video showed the tomb's roof knocked down.

The Observatory and other activists said government troops are backed by members of Lebanon's Hezbollah, which has been fighting alongside regime forces in their assault on rebel-held territory in the central region.

Syria's main exiled opposition group, the Syrian National Coalition, acknowledged that rebels had retreated from parts of Khaldiyeh, calling it a "tactical withdrawal."

"After the heavy bombardment of the Khaldiyeh area of Homs, using thousands of rockets, explosive barrels and large amounts of heavy weaponry ... Assad forces have managed to overtake a few yards of the land that they have pulverized," it said in a statement.

It said Assad was attempting the lift the sagging morale of his soldiers by exaggerating its victory in Homs, and vowed that rebels would soon retake the area.

In addition to its symbolic value, Homs is a geographic lynchpin in Syria. The main highway from Damascus to the north and the coast, a stronghold of President Bashar Assad's Alawite sect, runs through Homs.

An official in the Homs governor's office said a car bomb exploded near a checkpoint on the Homs-Tartous highway, killing three people and wounding 5 others. He spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to give official statements.

In northeastern Syria, the death toll from nearly two weeks of clashes between al-Qaida-linked fighters and Kurdish militiamen rose to 120, according to the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights activist group. It said the dead include 79 fighters from the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant and Jabhat al-Nusra, both al-Qaida-affiliated rebel groups. The Observatory monitors the Syrian war through a network of activists on the ground.

The latest round of fighting flared in Ras al-Ayn on July 6 in the predominantly Kurdish province of Hassakeh in the northeast near the Turkish border. Kurdish gunmen are fighting to expel the militants, whom they see as a threat.

Also on Sunday, the Coalition condemned the reported execution of scores of government soldiers by rebels in a northern Syrian village several days ago, and said "those involved in such crimes will be held accountable."

The group, made up of exiled opposition leaders, said in a statement that it was forming a commission of inquiry to investigate the incident in Khan al-Assal.

Syrian activists say rebels killed 150 government soldiers, some after they surrendered, on Monday and Tuesday in the village outside Aleppo, the country's largest city.

State media said that 123 "civilians and military personnel" were killed in a "massacre" and others were still missing.

The Coalition said initial reports showed "armed groups" not affiliated with the main rebel coalition were involved. It did not elaborate, but the al-Qaida-linked Jabhat al-Nusra says its fighters participated in the battle.

Syrian Information Minister Omran al-Zoubi said the crime "will not pass without punishment," vowing that the perpetrators will pay a "dear price."

In an interview with Syrian TV late Saturday, he said the "massacre" aimed to spread fear and panic among people at a time when the Syrian military was achieving significant progress on the ground.

In a separate statement, the Coalition urged Egypt to release dozens of Syrians it said were arrested last week allegedly for violating residency regulations.

It said Egyptian police arrested at least 72 Syrian men and nine boys at checkpoints on main roads in Cairo. Some had valid visas or residence permits but were arrested "on the pretext of not having residence permits," it said.

The Coalition said regulations concerning Syrians' entrance into Egypt were changed. Since July 8, Syrians have been required to obtain entry visas and security clearance before they are allowed to enter Egypt.

It urged the Egyptian government not to deport Syrians, saying Cairo has an "ethical and humanitarian duty to protect the Syrian people fleeing the tyranny" at home.

Why do China?s high-level representatives visit Burma too frequently?

Burma?s President Thein Sein received a delegation led by General Fan Changlong, the Vice-Chairman of the Central Military Commission of the People?s Liberation Army of China, at Credentials Hall of the Presidential Palace in Nay-Pyi-Taw on Tuesday, the state-run New Light of Myanmar said Wednesday.

According to the newspaper, Burmese President and the Chinese General discussed issues on peace development and stability in border areas including the topic of reaching perpetual peace with armed groups during the meeting,.

Besides, the two leaders also discussed to work together furthermore between the two governments and two armed forces of Myanmar (Burma) and China as well. They agreed that friendly relations between Burma and all eastern and western countries have taken place since President Thein Sein government has taken office. ?As said by the state media, Burmese President and the Chinese General also agreed to carry out strategically on comprehensive mutual partnership between the two countries as a second step.

Vice-Chairman of the Central Military Commission of the People?s Liberation Army of China General Fan Changlong was also welcomed by the Commander-in-Chief of Defense Services Senior General Min Aung Hlaing at Zeyathiri Beikman in Nay-Pyi-Taw on the same day, the state media reported. ?At the welcoming ceremony, General Fan Changlong was cordially welcomed by the Senior General as both went to the podium and took the salute of the Guard of Honor.

According to the newspaper, Senior General Min Aung Hlaing said that Myanmar (Burma) will keep on maintaining strategic partnership with China. Both generals agreed to cooperate intimately between the two governments and the two armed forces on regional security issues in order to promote peace and stability in border region. Burma Army will have to put into practice establishing good relations with armed forces of other countries, Senior General highlighted. He also called for further cooperation to guarantee supportive and competent administrative system along with peace and stability in border regions. He also ensured increasing joint-efforts in eradication against narcotic drugs.

He further stressed not to allow any non-state armed groups in border regions between the two countries as a primary responsibility.

As the government in cooperation with the armed forces has determined to bring lasting peace, eleven ?out of twelve ethnic armed groups have been reached ceasefire agreements, he added. Laws and rights for ethnic people of states and regions were enshrined in the 2008 Constitution and negotiation will be taken place in the hunt for peace, he added.

General Fan Changlong promised to strengthen strategic partnership of the two nations, and to cooperate with Myanmar/Burma for stability, security and eradication of narcotic drugs in the border region.

In last week of June, President Thein Sein also received a Chinese delegation led by Member of the State Council of the People?s Republic of China Mr. Yang Jiechi at the Credentials Hall of the Presidential Palace in Nay-Pyi-Taw. Yang arrived in Nay-Pyi-Taw, the country?s new capital, for a two-day visit at the invitation of the Burmese government.

According to the Chinese State Councilor, the two countries are traditionally friendly neighbors and Sino-Burma relations and bilateral cooperation were underway. He acknowledged great steps made by consecutive leaders cementing bilateral relations and mutual friendship. Yang Jiechi highlighted the President?s efforts for steps forward in bilateral friendship and cooperation in culture.

Burma watchers believe the frequent visits of? Chinese high-level delegations indicate about China?s serious concerns due to Burma?s changing foreign policy towards the US and EU countries. ?President Thein Sein government has suspended a controversial $3.6 billion Myitsone dam hydroelectric power project in September 2011 since the Chinese-financed project has faced objections from various social strata nationwide, according to the media reports.

According to analysts, criticism of the Chinese development projects has been getting higher in Burma as pro-democracy and environmental activists have started using their citizens? rights under the new government, which is calling itself a reformist and working to become a democratic administration.

Rodrigo Caporal: The Hong Kong Based Brazilian Lightweight Who is Dominating Chinese MMA

Rodrigo CaporalBrazilian fighters have been making a name for themselves competing in Asia since the dawn of modern MMA competition when Rickson Gracie would submit multiple opponents in a single night at Vale Tudo Japan.

Today, the sport has evolved almost beyond recognition, but fighters from the same country that gave us the Gracies are still holding their own in Asia. Among them is Rodrigo Caporal, a long-term resident of Hong Kong, who recently became the 155-pound champion of China.

Caporal (9-4) has won five fights out of five since signing with RUFF, a Chinese organization that is government sanctioned, giving its fighters the right to call themselves national champions of the most populated country on the planet.

The 30-year-old, who holds a black belt in BJJ, won the title at RUFF 8 in February by defeating Haotian Wu in a rematch. In addition to the belt, he received one million RMB (160,000 USD) in prize money.

?Winning the belt meant a lot to me, to see all my hard work and dedication pay off made me very happy.?My plan is to use the money to help my family and to help build my life together with my girlfriend,? he said.

Caporal?s record competing in Brazil was unremarkable, but he has won six fights out of six in Asia and believes that his skillset as a BJJ black belt gives him an edge against the predominantly Chinese opponents he has been facing.

?In Brazil, there was always more of a focus on the ground game because a lot more people practice Jiu-Jitsu. In China and in Asia, Jiu-Jitsu is growing in popularity, so today people are expanding their ground game and I am seeing more similarities,? he said.

Caporal moved to his adoptive home of Hong Kong in 2009 in order to share his submission skills and has been there ever since, training and teaching at Grips MMA. The country is slowly getting on board the MMA bandwagon and he believes that the sport is on the verge of enjoying the same sort of explosion in interest we have recently witnessed in Malaysia and Singapore.

?MMA isn?t huge here yet, but I think in one or two years a lot of doors will open here in Hong Kong with RUFF expanding, UFC coming to China, and if ONE FC do a show here it will definitely help increase awareness and popularity of MMA.?

After handing out its first five titles at RUFF 8 in February, the promotion took a break but returned in May for the start of a second season. Caporal expects to fight again next month, but says that a brand new lightweight title will now be up for grabs.

?I won?t have to defend my belt I already won because this belt is mine. My next fight is Aug. 24, and it will be the first in a series of upcoming RUFF fights for the new belt championship.?

There are some quality fighters on the RUFF roster, including featherweight champion Guan Wang (11-0) and bantamweight titleholder Irshaad Sayed (6-2), but only mixed martial artists who are either of Chinese nationality or living in Chinese territory and in possession of a valid work permit are able to compete.

Having already beaten all the best fighters in his division, Caporal will be a strong favorite to win the second season. But MMA is growing rapidly in China and dedicated camps like the X?ian Sports Institute and China Top Team are helping numerous high-level Sanda fighters who want to try their luck inside the cage.

Caporal has firmly established himself as the most dominant lightweight training and competing on Chinese territory. He maybe 10,000 miles from his hometown of Sao Paulo, but the Brazilian says he has plenty of fans there who follow his career.

?I have a great fan base in Brazil who like my fight style; their support is what keeps me going.?

Suspect sought after 4-year-old shot to death in Washington state

By M. Alex Johnson, Staff Writer, NBC News

Police in Washington state were searching for a convicted felon suspected of shooting and killing his girlfriend's 4-year-old son Sunday, police said.

The boy, whose name hasn't been released, was shot Sunday morning at the woman's home in Sedro-Woolley, in northern Washington, police told NBC station KING of Seattle.?He died at Skagit Valley Hospital in Mount Vernon.

Sedro-Woolley Police Chief Doug Wood told The Skagit Valley Herald of Mount Vernon that the shooting was being investigated as a homicide.

Investigators were searching for Trevor Braymiller, 25, described as a white male, about 5 feet, 8 inches tall, weighing 165 pounds, with brown hair and "scruffy" facial hair. Police said he was last seen wearing a bright red or orange shirt.

Police found a gun, believed to be the weapon that killed the boy, a few doors down from the scene, KING reported. Braymiller, the boy's mother, two other adults and another child were in the home at the time of the shooting, police said.

Wood said Braymiller should be considered armed and dangerous.

"Our concern is that he's going to force a confrontation with us in an emotional state," Wood said.

A former co-worker, Rueben Dreyer, told KING that Braymiller asked for a ride out of town.

"He said he went outside in the garage to smoke a cigarette, and he heard a boom and went back into the house, and his son wasn't moving," said Dreyer, who said Braymiller seemed scared and shaken but insisted he didn't shoot the boy.

"He must have gotten up and got (the gun). That's all he told me," Dreyer said.

Washington court records show that Braymiller has an extensive criminal record stretching to 2006.?In April, he pleaded guilty to felony possession of controlled substances in Skagit Valley Superior Court. The arrest report from July 2012 said he was found in possession of methamphetamine and heroin.

Police said Sunday that Braymiller was also involved in another drug raid in 2011, in which they seized weapons from him.

Yet this week, Verizon announced hot spring numbers, including 41% growth in iPhone activations compared to 2Q 2012. The latest rumors claim Google?s upcoming tablet will be equipped with an improved 7-inch 1980 x 1200-pixel display, a quad-core Snapdragon 600 processor, a 1.2-megapixel front-facing camera and a 5-megapixel camera on the back. The second-generation Nexus 7 is expected to be released later this month or in early August. The?substantial spring?revenue weakness from?BlackBerry and HTC implies that many second-tier brands are now in serious trouble with their brand new product launches. Samsung?s earnings miss was a shocker because the South Korean giant was supposed to have a wide open shot at dominating spring sales, particularly?because Apple?s iPhone sales started slowing down significantly in the March quarter. The industry is now staring at the possibility of the entire high-end smartphone market slowing down much faster than expected.?But Nokia is not dependent on high-end smartphones to the extent that BlackBerry and HTC are ? and that makes Nokia?s spring report absolutely riveting. The Wall Street Journal reports that new research from UBS shows the rate of smartphone upgrades declined by 9% year-over-year in 2012 and is projected to decline by another 2% year-over-year in 2013. The Journal says one reason why many users are upgrading their smartphones less often is that they don?t see any compelling innovation in new iPhone or Galaxy models that make them want to trade up.
