Who needs flavors of home when you can have flavors of Asia all up in your pulled pork sandwich. Hell, I should have just pickled some vegetables, thrown on some cilantro and called this a ghetto banh mi? but I didn?t. I let some of that damn nostalgia come in and topped my sandwich with some good old coleslaw and hot sauce ? just like the sandwiches I at so many of as a child.

In addition to the flavor differences, my preparation methods are very different for this version of pulled pork. First off, instead of marinating the pork in a dry rub, I marinated it in a combo of minced uber-sweet fresh pineapple and loads of garlic for about 24 hours. Secondly ? instead of my traditional tried and true methods of low and slow smoking or oven-roasting, I turned to my crockpot. I mean, February is, after all, slow cooker month! Why not celebrate it by letting my pork shoulder turn into dinner while I go out and get drinks, er, do work at an art festival. I put the marinated shoulder into the slow-cooker with some water and a tub of Knorr Homestyle Chicken Stock, turned that puppy on then walked away. Pineapple Marinated Pulled Pork with Hoisin-Pineapple Bbq Sauce

For the Pork:
3 cups fresh ripe pineapple, minced or food processed
cloves from 1 bulb garlic, peeled & minced
2 tbsp sambal oelek
2 tsp kosher salt
1 tsp freshly cracked black pepper
1 (approximately 5lb) bone-in pork shoulder
butcher's twine
1 1/2 cups water
1 tub Knorr Homestyle Chicken Stock

For the BBQ Sauce:
1/2 cup hoisin sauce
1/2 cup rice wine vinegar
1/2 cup fresh ripe pineapple, pureed
1/2 tsp chinese five spice

In a bowl, mix together the first 5 ingredients for the pork to create the marinade. Butterfly the pork shoulder, then stuff with a cup of the marinade. Using butcher's twine, tie the pork shoulder back into one even roast. Place stuffed shoulder into a larger resealable plastic bag. Pour the rest of the marinade over the roast, coating evenly. Seal the plastic bag, removing as much air as possible. Marinate pork for 12 to 24 hours, refrigerated.

Place the pork, marinade, 1 1/2 cups water & Knorr Homestyle Chicken Stock into a slow cooker on the low setting. Slow cook, covered, 8-10 hours or until the pork is falling apart. Remove from slow cooker, cut off butchers twine, then shred the pork, discarding any excess fat or bones.

In a mixing bowl, whisk together all ingredients for the barbecue sauce. Toss the pulled pork with the barbecue sauce until moistened to desired level. Taste and adjust season with more sauce or salt and pepper as desired. Great served on ciabatta rolls with an Asian-style slaw.

HARROWING CONDITIONS

The military onslaught on parts of Homs has created harrowing conditions for civilians, rebels and journalists.

If the constitution is approved in the vote, a foregone conclusion, it would drop an article making Assad?s Baath party the leader of state and society, allow political pluralism and enact a presidential limit of two seven-year terms.

But the limit will not be enforced retrospectively, meaning that Assad, already in power for 11 years, could serve another two terms after his current one expires in 2014.

Dozens of people lined up to vote in two polling stations visited by a Reuters journalist in Damascus. ?I?ve come to vote for President Bashar, God protect him and give him victory over his enemies,? said Samah Turkmani, in his 50s.

Another voter, Majed Elias, said: ?This is a national duty, whether I agree or not, I have to come and vote.?

This is Syria?s third referendum since Assad inherited power from his late father. The first installed him as president in 2000 with an official 97.29 percent ?Yes? vote. The second renewed his term seven years later with 97.62 percent in favor.

Four officials have been sentenced from three to 13 years in jail for last year's coal mine flooding that killed 13 people in China's Hunan province, reported Xinhua.

The deadly accident happened at the privately-run Duxing Coal Mine in Sandu township June 20 last year.

Kuang Laojian, former Communist Party of China (CPC) chief of Sandu township, was sentenced to 13 years in jail for dereliction of duty, abuse of power, taking bribes and corruption, according to the verdict by the people's court in Yongxing county.

Tao Guosheng, former head of Sandu township, was sentenced to three and a half years in prison for dereliction of duty and abuse of power, the verdict said.

The court said Kuang and Tao did not report to the government immediately after the accident and later lied about the toll, which delayed the rescue work and investigation.

Two other township officials, Deng Zhijian and Sun Yanshu, each received jail terms of three years for dereliction of duty and corruption, the court said.

The coal mine was operating illegally for a long term. Though the four officials were aware of the safety risks in the mine, they did not take measures to halt its operation, the court said.

American Idol 11 Top 24 - Who Immediately Has The Most Twitter Followers?

MJ of MJ's Big Blog did a piece for Entertainment Weekly about the Idol 11 contestants' Twitter followers. Twitter seems to be a pretty good indication of who is popular as the season progresses. And while a terrible song choice can do any of the contestants in, it's interesting to see how the contestants stacked up immediately after the Twitter accounts opened.
