Who said women couldn?t talk sports?
?I think sports are a lot like women: competitive, strategic, adaptive, and fast-paced.?
?Taryn Foshee
Football season means getting together with friends to watch those beloved teams vie for the title, but it?s also a time for women everywhere to be absolutely confused about that excruciating ?sports talk.?
Fear not, ladies. Former Miss Mississippi Taryn Foshee has come to the rescue.
Football season has swiftly approached, and in a matter of days, the floodgates will open to yet another college football season.
This year, it?s not just about the guys. It?s about girls, too.
Foshee recently launched a website encouraging all women to join in on the conversation with WomenCanTalkSports.com. The site urges women not to be intimidated by all the foreign lingos of the sports world, but to be empowered by the challenge.
Foshee explains the importance of being well informed in a society where sports are so pervasive.
?There are so many aspects of sports to be interested in whether it?s the billion dollar sports industry that influences the economics of schools, or the hundreds of stories-- good and bad-- about athletes and teams.?
?I have been blown away and so very encouraged by the positive feedback from women and men,? Foshee said.
According to Women Can Talk Sports, guys from coast to coast start compiling their secret lists and top-secret formulas in preparation for their super serious and stress-ridden fantasy football drafts.
The website gives women a chance to not feel so left out this season.
?I want to help women gain the confidence to join the conversation,? Foshee said.
?But, I know women need a safe place to ask questions and learn about sports before they can start talking.?
WCTS gives women a detailed play by play of what certain plays mean and how to understand fantasy football. The site also includes a tutorial of how to create a fantasy team.
For those who aren?t gifted in the mathematical arena, Foshee explains it.
With 1st down and 10, 2nd and 5, 3rd and 15 and so on, she touches on the most important concept of football for ladies to understand?Downs. For many, WCTS is the key that will unlock the entire game for girls who want to be a part of the conversation.
Senior casino and resort management major DeRae Graham has always been a sports fan, and she thinks Foshee?s website is going to be a helpful tool for women.
?What a great way to set a precedent for women connecting about sports,? Graham said.
?I love this idea, and I think it will open new doors for all women, whether they have always enjoyed sports or whether they were always curious but too afraid to ask!?
Women aren?t the only ones who think WCTS is a smart move.
?It is very attractive when a woman knows her sports,? Southern Miss basketball player Neil Watson said.
?It can make a relationship stronger, acting as a way of communication. Talking sports is something a couple can share while having fun. Every man dreams of a woman who can talk sports with him.?
Former Southern Miss cheerleader Adrienne McDill thinks women should let their voices be heard as long as they know what they are talking about.
?If women know what they?re talking about, they should most definitely join in on the conversation,? McDill said.
?They should have as much say so as any guy. Cheering for eleven years taught me that.?
So, girls, hitch and go. Let your voices be heard this football season? Who said women couldn?t talk sports?
