Senator Bill Wielechowski , D-Anchorage, delivered what he called a "one-man debate" at Begich Middle School on Saturday to address Governor Parnell's proposed oil tax legislation changes.
The presentation was titled, "Debunking Myths About ACES".? Wielechowski addressed concerns about oil tax legislation related to unemployment, the possibility of a state income tax, and effects on the Permanent Fund Dividend.
The bulk of the presentation was in support of Alaska's oil tax system "Alaska's Clear and Equitable Share", or ACES, which has been in place since 2007.? Wielechowski referenced data about Alaska's grow th in the oil market since 2007and said that since ACES passed, spending on roads, schools and other infrastructure has nearly doubled.
President of the Anchorage Chamber of Commerce, Andrew Halcro, described the presentation as "disingenuous," and added, "Never once did I hear Senator Wielechowski talk about how the state budget over the last 10 years has grown from 2.9 billion to 8.4 billion and oil production has declined from over a million barrels a day to less than 600 thousand."
Halcro said he will be debating Wielechowski on the matter on February 25 th at the Anchorage Chamber of Commerce's "Make it Monday" event.
