State denies prosecution deals with Steubenville football players

After my recent article on the auction of the contents of the Clarmont Steakhouse restaurant (click here) I heard from one of the local powerbrokers who frequented this iconic spot: Real estate developer Robert Weiler.

Here's what Bob had to say: Two names were left out of your article: Frank Kondos and Barry Zacks, both iconic restauranteurs responsible for the Clarmont's long tenure. Frank built a garage on the site to house his own expensive car, but was better known for his no-nonsense approach while serving as the Clarmont's maitre d'. He would not permit you to be seated, even if 10 of the 11 people in your party were present, until the last person arrived.

Once through with the meal, he had the waitresses remove all the items including the salt and pepper shakers and if that wasn't enough to encourage patrons to leave, he would come up to the table and stand over you. A couple minutes later he was known to say: "This is not an office, we have people waiting for this table."

The food was so good, and the waitresses so efficient, not even writing your order down on paper, that the customers kept coming back without regard to Frank clapping his hands whenever a waitress was needed at a table.

Along came Barry Zacks, a friendly Teddy bear, who would often sit at your table and kibitz, which some customers really liked, while others felt differently. Like Frank, Barry had a commitment to perfection, makign sure the food was prepared to the customer's satisfaction. As you may know, Barry acquired Max and Erma's when it was only a German Village restaurant and expanded it to include new restaurants not only in Ohio but some out-of-state location.

Also, I did learn about Frank's famous car: the white Rolls Royce pictured on the Clarmont menu for years. It was a special order in the 1960s, and is still around possibly in the Chicago area.
